Pembroke Dock : a bicentennial look back :1814-2014 /Phil Carradice & Roger MacCallum.
"In 2014 Pembroke Dock celebrates 200 years since its founding, when a Royal Dockyard - the only one ever to exist in Wales - was established here on the banks of Milford Haven. The dockyard was the reason for the rapid development of the town, with people from rural Pembrokeshire and from all around Britain moving to the area to work in the dockyard and the industries that serviced it. The closure of the dockyard in 1926 was a severe blow, and many families moved from the area to other dockyard towns. A new use was found for the dockyard and in the 1930s the RAF took over much of the old yard. Pembroke Dock was above all a military town, since, in addition to the RAF base, there were Army garrisons at Llanion, Defensible and Pennar Barracks. Today there is no military presence and the dockyard now hosts a ferry to Ireland. Pembroke Dock, 1814-2014: A Bicentennial Look Back presents readers with a series of photographs and old prints, illustrating the development of the town from the first half of the nineteenth century to the present day."--Provided by the publisher.

Tracing your seafaring ancestors : a guide to maritime photographs for family historians /Simon Wills.
Photographs of your seafaring ancestors may tell you more about their lives than you realize, and Simon Wills's helpful and practical guide shows you how to identify and interpret the evidence caught on camera. Since maritime roles have been so vital to Britain's prosperity and military might, they are among the commonest professions depicted in photographs of our ancestors, and his handbook is the ideal introduction to them. Maybe your ancestor was a seaman in the Royal Navy, a ship's captain, a steward on an ocean liner, or an officer in the naval reserves? This book shows you how to spot photographic clues to an individual's career. Whether your ancestor served in the merchant navy or the Royal Navy or in another seagoing role such as a fisherman, a lifeboatman, or even a ship's passenger, Simon Wills's book will be your guide.

London Docks in the 1960s / Mark Lee Inman
"The 1960s were the last decade of what might be called the traditional London docks scene. Ships could still be seen in the Pool, upstream of Tower Bridge; one could see lines of ships berth at the Royal Docks. Famous shipping companies, some like P&O dating back over a hundred years, were represented, and cargo-handling methods were unchanged. Barges were brought in to deliver or collect cargoes, while veterans of the war years and possibly earlier could still be seen. It was still possible to see passenger ships in the Royal Docks. As the new ships appeared they were a little bigger and a little faster, but otherwise little different from their predecessors of an earlier generation. All this is captured through Mark Lee Inman's historic and rare images, taking in the stretch from Tower Bridge right down to Tilbury. The photography is supported by a wealth of available technical detail, including the vessel?s date of build, gross tonnage and ownership, along with a comprehensive summary of its history and any claims to fame."--Provided by the publisher.

Seaforth World Naval Review : 2024.
"For more than a decade this annual volume has provided an authoritative summary of all the developments in the world's navies and their ships in the previous twelve months. It combines regional surveys with major articles on important new warships, and looks at wider issues of significance to navies such as aviation and weaponry. The contributors come from around the globe and as well as providing a balanced picture of naval developments, they interpret their significance and explain their context. As well as its regular regional reviews, the 2024 volume focusses on three fleets: the Brazilian Navy, the Hellenic Navy and the Royal Navy. There are in-depth articles on the French Auguste Benebig class of overseas patrol vessels, the Indian P15A & P15B Kolkata/Visakhapatnam class destroyers, and the Spanish S-80 Class Isaac Peral class submarines. The third regular section of the volume is devoted to reviews of important technological developments around the world. David Hobbs looks at aspects of naval aviation and focusses on US unmanned systems. Norman Friedman outlines developments in naval propulsion systems, while Richard Scott analyses the Kongsberg/Raytheon naval strike missile. Now firmly established as the only annual naval overview of its type in the world, The Seaforth World Naval Review is essential reading for professional and enthusiast alike. It takes the reader to the heart of contemporary maritime affairs."--Provided by the publisher.

Bibliotheca Pepysiana : a descriptive catalogue of the library of Samuel Pepys.
Parts I, III and IV of a four-volume catalogue (the set excludes Part II) containing a list and descriptions of items in the library of Samuel Pepys. Part I is a bibliography of 114 volumes classified by Pepys as the 'Sea' manuscripts. They consist mainly of official documents penned by retiring officials of Pepys's own time and documents brought together to serve as material for a projected History of the Navy. These include the naval discourses of Monson, Hollond and Slyngesbie, Mountgomery's Book of the Navy, Fragments of Ancient English Shipwrightery, and Deane's Doctrine of Naval Architecture. Also included are books and papers, not necessarily dealing with naval history, that Pepys found of interest, and a subject and personal name index. Part III is a catalogue of mainly Mediaeval Manuscripts and includes a brief list of these by title and an index of contents. Part IV, a bibliography of Pepys's books on stenography, also contains an alphabetical list of the authors of various methods of shorthand together with a similar list for works not found in the collection at its close in March 1695. A list of abbreviations comes before the introduction.

The WRNS in wartime : the Women's Royal Naval Service, 1917-1945 /Hannah Roberts.
"The Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS) was created in 1917, re-formed in 1938 and maintained after 1945. This book determines for the first time the reasons for the expansion and contraction of the service and the impact key individuals had on it and in turn the influence it had on its members. Hannah Roberts offers new insights into a previously little studied British military institution, which celebrates its centenary in 2017. She shows how political and military decision-making within the fluctuating national security situation, coupled with a growing cultural acceptability of women taking on military roles, allowed for the growth of the service in World War II into realms never expected of women. Although it shared a similar pattern in its formation to the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) and had a similar ethos to its Air Force counterpart, the WAAF, the WRNS took on a wider-ranging role in the war, in part due to the latitude afforded to the service because of its uniquely independent origins. From 1941 onward the WRNS spread internationally and subverted the combat taboo by adopting semi-combatant roles. Using twenty-one new oral histories and a multitude of archived personal documents, this book demonstrates the pivotal importance of the Women's Royal Naval Service in both the world wars."--Provided by the publisher.

The world of the battleship : the lives and careers of twenty-one capital ships from the World's navies, 1880-1990 /edited by Bruce Taylor.
"This new volume is intended to present a genuinely global vision of the development of world's battleships. In a collection of chapters by experts from around the world, the design, building and career of a significant battleship from each of the world's navies is explored in such a way as to illuminate not just the ships but also the communities of officers and men that served in them and, more broadly, the societies and nations that built them. While ships from the Royal Navy, the US Navy, the Kriegsmarine, the Imperial Japanese Navy, the Marine Nationale and the Regia Navale are given significant coverage, so are those from the smaller navies, for example, Austria-Hungary, Russia and Turkey. Each chapter explains the origins of a particular ship, her importance as a national symbol and her place in the fleet. The genesis of her design along with particulars of her protection, armament and propulsion are covered and the construction process and launching described. The ship's complement and organisation are detailed, and daily routine and watch-keeping explained, and how this varied between peace and war. Life onboard - eating and sleeping for officers and ratings, discipline, pay, morale, pets and mascots - are covered as well as a full account of the ship's career, so that the distinctive character of each vessel and navy emerges. This is a highly original and significant book on the great capital ships of the world."--Provided by the publisher.

Ship killer : a history of the American torpedo /Thomas Wildenberg and Norman Polmar.
"In this book, Thomas Wildenberg and Norman Polmar provide a definitive work on the development and use of the torpedo by the U.S. Navy. Their book begins with an overview of the early undersea weapons developed by Bushnell and Fulton, the spar torpedo of the Civil War and attempts to imitate the Whitehead torpedo, and then focuses on American torpedo development for use from submarines, surface warships and small combatants, and aircraft."--Publisher's description.
