The unforgiving minute. The autobiography of Rear-Admiral Sir Morgan Morgan-Giles (1914-2013), primarily written for his family. Joining the China fleet as a midshipman in 1932, his wartime duties included operations in Norway, the Mediteranean, Suez, Tobruk and Yugoslavia as well as serving with the Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm, and finally in the Far East. After the war Morgan-Giles continued to serve in the Royal Navy, in 1961 taking command of HMS Belfast, then flagship of the Far East Fleet. Promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1963, he became President of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. Leaving the Royal Navy in 1964, Morgan-Giles become Member of Parliament for Winchester, retiring in 1979. In 1971 he successful saved HMS Belfast from scrapping by campaigning to transform the ship into a museum. Nelson's Arctic voyage : the Royal Navy's first polar expedition 1773 /Peter Goodwin. "In the summer of 1773 the 14-year old Horatio Nelson took part in an expedition to the Arctic, which came close to ending his naval career before it had begun. The expedition was to find a navigable northern passage between the Atlantic and Pacific, and was supported by the Royal Society and King George III. Two bomb vessels HMS Racehorse and Carcass were fitted out and strengthened under the command of Captain Hon. Constantine Phipps. It was an extremely cold Arctic summer and the ships became locked in ice far from Spitzbergen and were unable to cut their way out until days later when the wind changed and the ice broke up. The ships were extricated and returned home. On the trip, the young Nelson had command of one of the smaller boats of the ships, a four-oared cutter manned by twelve seamen. In this he helped to save the crew of a boat belonging to the Racehorse from an attack by a herd of enraged walruses. He also had a more famous encounter with a polar bear, while attempting to obtain a bearskin as a present for his father, an exploit that later became part of the Nelson legend. Drawing on the ship's journals and expedition commander Phipps' journal from the National Archives, the book creates a picture of the expedition and life on board. Using the ships' muster books it also details the ship's crews giving the different roles and ranks in the ships. The book is illustrated using some of the ship's drawings and charts and pictures of many objects used on the ship, while a navigational chart of the route taken has been created from the logbooks. The book also looks at the overall concept of naval exploration as set in train by Joseph Banks and the Royal Society. The fact that the expedition failed as a result of poor planning with potentially tragic results demonstrates the difficulties and uncertainties of such an expedition. It also looks at a great naval commander at the earliest stage of his career and considers how the experience might have shaped his later career and attitudes. Writing to think : the intellectual journey of a naval career /Robert C. Rubel. The purpose of this volume is to honor the work and thought of Robert C. Rubel, Captain, U.S. Navy (Ret.). Since his retirement from the Navy, Robert (a.k.a. "Barney") Rubel has held senior positions in the Center for Naval Warfare Studies (CNWS), in the Naval War College, in Newport, Rhode Island -- first as deputy dean, then as chairman of the War Gaming Department, and finally (since 2006) as dean. During this period, not only has he presided effectively over a complex (and in many ways anomalous) institution, but he has found the time to create a substantial body of published writings about naval warfare and war, or strategy generally. In the process, he has quietly established himself as one of the Navy's most innovative and wide-ranging thinkers. This volume brings together a selection of Rubel's short papers from over the last decade and a half. Viewed as a single body of thought, they gain in weight from being read and considered together. Greenwich and its lost hospitals : havens of maritime welfare /Gordon C Cook "The Royal Hospital (RH) was built near the site of the Palace of Placentia and erected by King William III (1650?1702) as a memorial for his consort, Queen Mary II (1662-94) who died of smallpox. It was designed by Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723) and functioned until 1870 as a hospital for retired mariners of the Royal Navy. The Dreadnought Hospital was the 'flagship' of the Seamen's Hospital Society (SHS) between 1870 and its closure in 1986. The SHS was a charitable foundation launched in 1821 to care for members of Britain's Mercantile Marine and later others also. Having been accommodated on three successive hospital ships, it moved to dry land in Greenwich in 1870.
