.' : the life of Admiral John Inglis : an American in the Georgian
Navy
/Jim Tildesley.
"The life of John Inglis was so epic, it could have been a work of fiction. he was born in Philadelphia, the son of a slave trading merchant. As an underage Lieutenant commanding a schooner hunting smugglers before the Boston Tea Party, he also dined with George Washington before the War of Independence. having settled in Scotland and inheriting his uncle's Edinburgh estate, he returned to the Navy. Shipwrecked in Norway, he became embroiled in a secret service attempt to persuade Dutch naval commanders to desert. His vessel was invovle din the Nore Mutiny and astoundingly, he was held prisonder on his own ship. Honoured by the City of Edinburgh he returned to the navy for another year before giving up his command and being given the rank of Admiral in retirement. The naval career of John Inglis is not just an incredible story but one that enables a close view of life in the eighteenth-century navy. 'I am determined to live or die on board my ship' covers his action-packed naval career starting as a midshipman in command of the guns of a frigate in action against the French, and ending as the severely wounded captain of a warship in a closely fought victory against the Dutch."--Provided by the publisher.

The Royal
Navy
and the war at sea, 1914-1919 / introduced and compiled by Martin Mace and John Grehan
"Germany's attempts to build a battleship fleet to match that of the United Kingdom, the dominant naval power on the 19th-century and an island country that depended on seaborne trade for survival, is often listed as a major reason for the enmity between those two countries that led to the outbreak of war in 1914. Indeed, German leaders had expressed a desire for a navy in proportion to their military and economic strength that could free their overseas trade and colonial empire from dependence on Britain's good will, but such a fleet would inevitably threaten Britain's own trade and empire. Despite this backdrop of large standing navies, naval warfare in the First World War was mainly characterized by the efforts of the Allied powers, with their larger fleets and surrounding position, to blockade the Central Powers by sea, and the efforts of the Central Powers to break that blockade or to establish an effective blockade of the UK with submarines and raiders. Indeed, the use of the former saw naval conflict enter a new era, one that affected every member of the British population and, in 1917, raised the spectre of a German victory. This unique collection of original documents will prove to be an invaluable resource for historians, students and all those interested in what was one of the most significant periods in British military history. Despatches in this volume include those relating to the events at Antwerp in 1914, Royal Navy armoured car squadrons, the Battle of Dogger Bank, the Battle of the Falklands, the Battle of Heligoland Bight, minesweeping operations, Royal Naval Air Service operations and attacks, and, of course, the Battle of Jutland."--Provided by the publisher.

Crisis at sea : the United States
Navy
in European waters in World War I /William N.
"Crisis at Sea is the first comprehensive history of the United States Navy in European waters during World War I. Drawing on vast American, British, German, French, and Italian sources, the author presents the U.S. Naval experience as America moved into the modern age of naval warfare. Not limited to an operations account of naval battles and strategies, this volume - the second in a series - examines diplomatic policies, cabinet decisions, logistics, the home front, support systems, and shipbuilding to illustrate the complexity and enormity of America's naval participation in World War I." "This is a thorough treatment of not only the events but also the personalities of the war, with particular attention paid to the difficulties they faced. The book reveals insights into the United States' relations in the world, the nation's unpreparedness for such a war, the limits imposed on the Navy by the cabinet, and the unexpected conclusion to the war. Much of the author's exhaustive research is new, such as the use of French official documents and British recollections of the American ships and sailors. This book will be the standard reference volume for libraries and serious scholars with a special interest in World War I and in the history of warfare."--Provided by the publisher.

They couldn't have done it without us : the Merchant
navy
in the Falklands War /John Johnson-Allen.
Over seventy merchant ships sailed in the Task force sent by Britain to recapture the Falkland islands in 1982. Some were Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels, but the majority were STUFT-ships taken up from trade-and the officers and crew of these merchant vessels, all volunteers, suddenly found themselves thrust into a war zone in the South Atlantic. Remarkably little has been written about the part played by the Merchant navy, summarised by the official history of the campaign as 'an impenetrable mystery, girt about by seasickness' This book lifts the curtain on that mystery, to reveal something of the experiences of the merchant seamen and women who made possible the retaking of the Falkland islands. John Johnson-Allen, maritime historian and former merchant naval officer, combines personal accounts, documents and comment to bring to life the events of the Falklands War, as seen from the merchant ships that played such a vital role in that conflict.

All parts bearing an even strain : an engine room artificer in the Royal
Navy
(1928-1945) :remembering
A biography of Royal Navy sailor John Hornabrook Smith, who served from 1928 to 1946 as an engine room artificer, chiefly on destroyers on commission to East Asia. The book is based almost entirely on Smith's own service notebook, and includes brief accounts of his service in ships including HMS Devonshire, HMS Greenwich, HMS Kempenfelt, HMS Hermes, and HMS Obdurate, descriptions of daily life in Navy service, extensive notes on ship movements and convoys, details of Smith's record during the Second World War, and further information on certain vessels and events mentioned in the text. Extensively illustrated with black and white photographs, mostly from Smith's own collection.
