The Brutish Museums : the Benin Bronzes, colonial violence and cultural restitution /Dan Hicks.
"Walk into any European museum today and you will see the curated spoils of Empire. They sit behind plate glass: dignified, tastefully lit. Accompanying pieces of card offer a name, date and place of origin. They do not mention that the objects are all stolen. Few artefacts embody this history of rapacious and extractive colonialism better than the Benin Bronzes - a collection of thousands of brass plaques and carved ivory tusks depicting the history of the Royal Court of the Obas of Benin City, Nigeria. Pillaged during a British naval attack in 1897, the loot was passed on to Queen Victoria, the British Museum and countless private collections. The story of the Benin Bronzes sits at the heart of a heated debate about cultural restitution, repatriation and the decolonisation of museums. In The Brutish Museums, Dan Hicks makes a powerful case for the urgent return of such objects, as part of a wider project of addressing the outstanding debt of colonialism."--Provided by the publisher.

The Women's Royal Naval Service : a world war two memoir /Brenda Birney.
"Aged only 24, in 1941 Brenda Heimann, a London secretary, joins up as a Wren. Little does she imagine that she will work in the tunnels under the white cliffs of Dover. Eight months' preparation for D-Day in Inverness culminates in Brenda being driven all along the south coast of England from Portsmouth to Dover delivering the final sealed instructions to commanders taking part in the Invasion of Normandy. Stationed in Caserta, near Naples, Brenda was shown round Venice by one of the real Monuments' Men. At the end of the War, Brenda takes her first flight - from Naples to Malta for her last posting. The WRNS was the time of her life!"--Provided by the publisher.

Women warriors : ten courageous lives of women who went to war /Tracey-Ann Knight.
"After her beloved husband was forced to fight for William III, Mrs Christian 'Kit' Welsh was not going to let her happy home be torn apart by war. Instead, she donned her husband's clothes and joined the Duke of Marlborough's Dragoons. Under the name of Christopher Welsh, she began her pursuit of her 'brother' Richard, which took her across Europe, onto the battlefield throughout the Nine Years War and the War of the Spanish Succession, and through an exploration of her own identity as a woman, wife, mother and soldier. Women Warriors explores the compelling lives of ten extraordinary women who rejected the limits that society placed upon their sex, by dressing as men and entering the masculine worlds of the state and military. These women fought, slept, grumbled and caroused alongside their fellow soldiers, all without discovery over various time periods - from weeks to decades. Despite the restrictions on women in close combat in the military, which still hold today, these women were involved in pivotal battles throughout history, including Ramillies, Bull Run, the fight for colonial India, and in the trenches of the First World War. They were wounded, taken prisoner, fought duels and risked life and limb for their country alongside their male comrades."--Provided by the publisher.

The promised land: the story of emigration from Oxfordshire, and neighbouring Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire 1815-1914 /Martin Greenwood.
"The author has written a lively and knowledgeable story of emigration from Oxfordshire and its neighbouring shires from 1815 to 1914. The story begins with the voyages of Captain Cook, which led to the provision of new places for penal colonies in Australia. Free emigration also gathered steam in the 1830s, followed by the Great Exodus from 1850. The story evokes the bustle and confusion of migrants at Liverpool, and the emotions of departure. It looks at their shipping, health problems, costs and shipwrecks, and at their experience on arrival. It also examines the political changes, particularly to the Poor Laws and Corn Laws."--Provided by the publisher.

Slavery in the age of memory : engaging the past /Ana Lucia Araujo.
"Exploring notions of history, collective memory, cultural memory, public memory, official memory, and public history, Slavery in the Age of Memory: Engaging the Past explains how ordinary citizens, social groups, governments and institutions engage with the past of slavery and the Atlantic slave trade. It illuminates how and why over the last five decades the debates about slavery have become so relevant in the societies where slavery existed and which participated in the Atlantic slave trade. The book draws on a variety of case studies to investigate its central questions. How have social actors and groups in Europe, Africa and the Americas engaged with the slave past of their societies? Are there are any relations between the demands to rename streets of Liverpool in England and the protests to take down Confederate monuments in the United States? How have black and white social actors and scholars influenced the ways slavery is represented in George Washington's Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson's Monticello in the United States? How do slave cemeteries in Brazil and the United States and the walls of names of Whitney Plantation speak to other initiatives honoring enslaved people in England and South Africa? What shared problems and goals have led to the creation of the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool and the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC? Why have artists used their works to confront the debates about slavery and its legacies? The important debates addressed in this book resonate in the present day. Arguing that memory of slavery is racialized and gendered, the book shows that more than just attempts to come to terms with the past, debates about slavery are associated with the persistent racial inequalities, racism, and white supremacy which still shape societies where slavery existed. Slavery in the Age of Memory: Engaging the Past is thus a vital resource for students and scholars of the Atlantic world, the history of slavery and public history."--Provided by the publisher.

Teaching to transgress : education as the practice of freedom /bell hooks.
"In Teaching to Transgress, bell hooks - writer, teacher, and insurgent black intellectual - writes about a new kind of education, education as the practice of freedom. Teaching students to "transgress" against racial, sexual, and class boundaries in order to achieve the gift of freedom is, for hooks, the teacher's most important goal. bell hooks speaks to the heart of education today: how can we rethink teaching practices in the age of multiculturalism? What do we do about teachers who do not want to teach, and students who do not want to learn? How should we deal with racism and sexism in the classroom? Full of passion and politics, Teaching to Transgress combines a practical knowledge of the classroom with a deeply felt connection to the world of emotions and feelings. This is the rare book about teachers and students that dares to raise questions about eros and rage, grief and reconciliation, and the future of teaching itself. "To educate is the practice of freedom," writes bell hooks, "is a way of teaching anyone can learn." Teaching to Transgress is the record of one gifted teacher's struggle to make classrooms work."--Provided the publisher.

The handgun / Geoffrey Boothroyd.
"The Handgun is a comprehensive and detailed study of the evolution of this most personal of weapons from the early matchlocks, wheellocks and flintlocks to the revolvers and automatics of today. Over the span of three and a half centuries, every aspect of that evolution, from the purely technical to the sociological, is given its rightful emphasis, and the development of improved mechanisms is interwoven with the story of the men who invented and perfected those mechanisms and of the great arms companies who manufactured them. From the time when craftsmanship of the individual gunmaker was paramount, through the revolutionising advent of the machine age to the era of mass production and mechanical perfection, each new phase is fully and authoratively described. The weapon of war, as a duelling pistol, as a weapon of self-defence, or as a weapon for competitive shooting - are all fully documented, as are the differences both between variant types of handgun and between particular models of the same basic type. Similarly well covered is the parallel development of gun furniture, of decoration, and of that vital ancillary, the cartridge. The comprehensive text is complemented by an equally comprehensive range of well over 800 illustrations. Many of the weapons shown have never been illustrated before, the majority of the illustrations have never been previously published and, in many cases, the pistols are not only shown complete but also dismantled into their component parts. Of particular value is the fact that complex technical points are frequently clarified by the inclusion of the original patent drawings. In writing this book Geoffrey Boothroyd visited many of the major collections of arms in both Britain and Europe, and also the major manufacturers, dealers and agents."--Provided by the publisher.

Joseph Brown and his Civil War ironclads : the USS Chillicothe, Indianola and Tuscumbia /Myron J. Smith, Jr.
"A Scottish immigrant to Illinois, Joseph Brown made his pre-Civil War fortune as a miller and steamboat captain who dabbled in riverboat design and the politics of small towns. When war erupted, he used his connections (including a friendship with Abraham Lincoln) to obtain contracts to build three ironclad gunboats for the U.S. War Department--the Chillicothe, Indianola and Tuscumbia. Often described as failures, these vessels were active in some of the most ferocious river fighting of the 1863 Vicksburg campaign. After the war, 'Captain Joe' became a railroad executive and was elected mayor of St. Louis. This book covrs his life and career, as well as the construction and operational histories of his controversial trio of warships."--Provided by the publisher.
