Papers of the Hobart whaling conference : 6-7 May 2019 /editors: Graeme Broxam and Dale Chatwin.
"The Inaugural Hobart Whaling Conference held in Hobart in May 2019 and hosted by the Maritime Museum of Tasmania sought to harvest the enormous amount of personal research which occurs outside of the funded university research scholarship and academic system. In addition to contributions by Australian whaling and sealing researchers the conference attracted papers by three British researchers and three New Zealand researchers. The range of topics explored whaling and sealing around Australasia and the Pacific by the British and Colonial Whale and Seal Fisheries. And through American contributions were not sought the Conference still managed to accommodate two papers related to American whaling - one on the American presence in Hobart in the 1840s and 1850s and the other on US bay whaling rock art left behind in norht-western Australia in the 1840s. In this volume you will find three papers on British Southern Whale Fishery. One on whaling to the north of Australia around Indonesia and New Guinea; the second, based on newly uncovered logs, on the remarkable whaling career of British whaling master, James Choyce; and the third on British south sea whaling surgeons who's importance as skilled observers and commentators is becoming ever more significant. This is followed by a three Colonial (Australian and New Zealand) papers including a project to create Track Charts for whaling voyages where no log exists; a paper on the Waiopuka Fishery based at Kaikoura in the 1840s; and a 'viewing' and discussion of the 'Whangamumu Whaling Film' made in the 1930s which sought to re-enact using original whalemen the techniques of chasing and taking humpback whales from open boats. Five papers on Tasmanian and Hobart whaling include a paper seeking to establish the true scale of Tasmania whaling; an examination of the story of Tasmanian whaling presented in popular 'histories'; a look at the whaling and sealing interests of Tasmanian George Meredith; a paper on the activities of the American Consul in Hobart in the 1840s and 1850s; and a paper examining Norwegian interests in the 1920s and 30s when they found Hobart a useful base of Antarctic whaling. Sealing papers include some preliminary thoughts on three Sydney based entrepreneurs from very early days in the Colony including JOhn Grono and a paper on the involvement of the Australian sealer Richard Siddins on the South Shetland Islands. Moving back to whaling the Proceedings final papers include an in-depth examination of whaling in Western Australian from drift to modern whaling and lastly a paper examining British whalers as collectors of cultural and natural history artefacts and specimens. All in all a tremendously varied and unique set of papers on what was the first Colonial industry."--Provided by the publisher.

The battlecruiser New Zealand : a gift to empire /Matthew Wright.
"This book tells the story of HMS New Zealand, a battlecruiser paid for by the government of New Zealand at the height of its pro-Imperial 'jingo' era in 1909, when Britain's ally Japan was perceived as a threat in Australasia and the Pacific. Born of the collision between New Zealand's patriotic dreams and European politics, the tale of HMS New Zealand is further wrapped in the turbulent power-plays at the Admiralty in the years leading up to the First World War. The ship went on to have a distinguished First World War career, when she was present in all three major naval battles - Heligoland, Dogger Bank and Jutland - in the North Sea. The book 'busts' many of the myths associated with the ship and her construction, including the intent of the gift, New Zealand's ability to pay, deployment, and the story behind the piupiu (skirt) and tiki (pendant) that, the crew believed, bestowed special protection upon the vessel. All is inter-woven with the human and social context to create a 'biography' of the ship as an expression of human endeavour, in significantly more detail than any of the summaries available in prior accounts. Extensively illustrated, this is a book with appeal to a wide audience, from naval enthusiasts and historians to the general reader with a wider interest in the story of Empire. The use of archival material available only in New Zealand, including the Ship's Book, adds a dimension and novelty not previously included in histories of this great battlecruiser."--Provided by the publisher.

The SS Terra Nova (1884-1943) : whaler, sealer and polar exploration ship /Michael C. Tarver.
"SS Terra Nova was most famous for being the vessel to carry the ill-fated 1910 polar expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott, but the story of this memorable ship, built in wood to enable flexibility in the ice, continued until 1943, when she sank off Greenland. This newly designed and updated edition presents the definitive illustrated account of one of the classic polar exploration ships of the 'heroic age'. Put together from accounts recorded by the men who sailed in her, it tells the sixty-year history of a ship built by a famous Scottish shipbuilding yard, in the nineteenth-century days of whaling and sealing before coal gas and electricity replaced animal oils."--Provided by the publisher.

Making marvels : science and splendour at the courts of Europe /edited by Wolfram Koeppe.
"Innovation, technology, and spectacle combine in wondrous works of decorative art and furniture that embody the splendor and luxury of the royal courts of Europe. At once beautiful works of art and technological wonders, the objects featured in Making Marvels demonstrate how European royalty from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment signaled their status through their collections of ingeniously crafted inventions. Featuring 150 exemplary objects ranging from mechanical toys to scientific instruments, timepieces to automata, this groundbreaking study brings to life a glorious period when luxury, a quest for knowledge, scientific invention, and political power combined to produce remarkable works of art. More than frivolous playthings, these works inspired technical innovations that influenced a broad spectrum of activities, including astronomy, engineering, and artisanal craftsmanship. This remarkable volume explores works in a wide range of materials, including precious metals, gemstones, pietra dura, marble, ivory, wood, bone, shell, glass, and paper. The book's compelling essays address the layered historical context in which these objects were fashioned and gathered into cabinets of wonder at courts throughout Europe; elucidate their complex blending of art and science; and provide fascinating details about the patrons who commissioned them and the specialists who made them."--Provided by the publisher.

The cruellest twist : the Iolaire disaster = An reubadh as geire :tubaist na h-Iolaire
"The cruellest twist. The Outer Hebrides are a diverse chain of inter-connected islands, situated on Europe's Atlantic edge, remote and wild and tranquil in equal measure, with their own unique culture and way of life. The Great War had a huge impact on the Islands, but it was soon after the war had ended that one of the saddest events in the history of the Islands unfolded. The HMY Iolaire sank within sight of Stornoway Harbour in the early hours of New Year's Day 1919, after hitting a treacherous cluster of rocks known locally as the Beasts of Holm. This is the story of the most sad and tragic of ends of those who lost their lives and of the few who managed to survive. This is also the story of the last leg of a long journey home that by rights should not have gone wrong and of the disaster which affected the Isle of Lewis and shrouds it still with a deep sense of grief."--Provided by the publisher.

The gallery of fashion
The author has selected 100 portraits, held by the National Portrait Gallery London, as a basis for her study of costume and fashion. She focuses on the way the portrait subjects used fashion and costume to project a certain image of themselves. The study spans the period from the Tudors to the present day and ranges from Elizabeth I to Vivienne Westwood and from Sir Francis Drake to the Beatles. The book is illustrated with paintings, drawings and engravings and photographs of surviving examples of costume. The text explains the purpose and context of the dress in which each sitter chose to be portrayed. Further details are given in the form of documentation, related works of art and close-up details which focus on construction, decoration and design.

Goldsmith's College : a centenary account
Goldsmiths' College occupies the site of a distiller's house built in 1789 in New Cross. Educational activities have been carried on there since 1792. The premises were later used for a private school to the Royal Naval School in 1843. When the School moved to Eltham in 1889 the buildings were acquired by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. Between 1891 and 1905 the Company maintained a Technical and Recreative Institute. The buildings were presented to the University of London in 1904; Goldsmiths' College has been part of the University ever since. Known as a teacher training college, it also maintained a School of Art and an Evening Department. From about 1960 the range of activities expanded until in 1988 it was admitted as a full School of the University of London. This book was published as part of Goldsmiths' centenary celebrations in 1991 and tells the story of its development over the years. There are numerous black and white photographs, and an index of persons. Appendix B lists the Wardens of Goldsmiths' College from 1905.

Gallipoli : braw laddies amidst the clash of the Empires /Stuart Delves.
"The name Gallipoli has a mournful echo in the memories of many nations - not least in Scotland's, for many brave young Scottish soldiers ended their lives there in appalling conditions in 1915. The names Cape Helles, Gully Ravine and Achi Baba Nullah have a sadder ring, as these were the places where scores of young men died, mowed down by machine gun fire of blown to bits by shells. Commemorative Services are being held across Lowland and Highland Scotland and eminent historian Sir Hew Strachan will be delivering a Lecture at the University of Stirling on Thursday 4th June 2015 - one hundred years after the Scottish Battalions arrived in Gallipoli."--Provided by the publisher.

Unwanted neighbours : the Mughals, the Portuguese, and their frontier zones /Jorge Flores.
"In December 1572 the Mughal emperor Akbar arrived in the port city of Khambayat. Having been raised in distant Kabul, Akbar, in his thirty years, had never been to the ocean. Presumably anxious with the news about the Mughal military campaign in Gujarat, several Portuguese merchants in Khambayat rushed to Akbar's presence. This encounter marked the beginning of a long, complex, and unequal relationship between a continental Muslim empire that was expanding into south India, often looking back to Central Asia, and a European Christian maritime empire whose rulers considered themselves 'kings of the sea'. By the middle of the seventeenth century, these two empires faced each other across thousands of kilometres from Sind to Bijapur, with a supplementary eastern arm in faraway Bengal. Focusing on borderland management, imperial projects, and cross-cultural circulation, this volume delves into the ways in which, between c. 1570 and c. 1640, the Portuguese understood and dealt with their undesirably close neighbours - the Mughals."--Provided by the publisher.

Poor England has lost so many men : the loss of Queen Anne's man o'war Association, three other warships & 1,450 lives in the Isles of Scilly /edited by Richard Larn.
"Locals on the Isles of Scilly woke on 23rd October 1707, completely unaware of the disaster that was still unfolding out amongst the Western Rocks. Wrecks were no novelty here on Scilly, but a disaster on this scale was unprecedented, and its impact and effect on Islanders must have been one of total disbelief as the news spread. During the previous night a fleet of British men o'war had literally blundered into the rocks surrounding the Bishop and CLers, with an appalling loss of ships and men, which was to prove the second worst disaster in the long history of the Royal Navy. HMS Gannet : ship and model /William Mowll ; foreword by Fred Walker.
"HMS Gannet, beautifully restored today at Chatham Historic Dockyard, is a fine example of the small colonial schooners that were built and deployed in the second half of the nineteenth century to police Britains great empire and enforce the peace of Pax Britannica. Launched at Sheerness in 1878 with her white Mediterranean livery and elegant clipper bow, she was the epitome of the colonial gunboat. In this new book by the well-known ship modeller Will Mowll, the design and history of Gannet is outlined before the author takes the reader on a detailed photographic step-by-step exposition of the building of his 1/48 scale model of the ship. A particular feature of the model is the inclusion of a static representation of the 2-cylinder compound steam engine with its three cylindrical boilers. Exquisitely detailed, with even the bunkered coal beautifully modelled, all the machinery is made visible by means of the removable deck. The author has therefore reconstructed a major feature of the ship which is no longer extant on the prototype at Chatham. All the information that a ship modeller might need is included here hull construction and the coppering of the ships bottom, the making of the ships steam propulsion systems, the decks and decking, armament, steering gear, mast and yards and rigging, and even the furniture in the wardroom. No part of the ship is left hidden. Inspiring with the sheer quality of his workmanship, the author has brought beautifully to life another of Britains great museum ships."--Provided by the publisher

Djuka society and social change : history of an attempt to develop a Bush Negro community in Surinam 1917-1926 /Silvia Wilhelmina de Groot.
"This study deals with a period in the history of the Djukas, one of the Bush Negro tribes of Surinam. It concerns the period of 1917 to 1926, which has particular significance because during that time the first systematic effort was made to bring about social change and to draw them more fully into the whole of the Surinam community. This development plan was initiated by the Colonial Administration and its execution was assigned to an official specially appointed for the purpose called a postholder."--Provided by the publisher (introduction).

Merchant Navy : an introduction /edited by Alexander Arnfinn Olsen.
"The merchant navy offers a challenging yet exciting career choice for anyone willing to invest the time and effort. It is a career not suited to everyone, naturally, with long and lonely stints at sea surrounded by nothing but the open ocean. Time spent in port is often limited and stressful. Living and working with the same people for weeks and months on end can inevitably lead to flashes of irritation and antagonism. But with all things said and done, there is no experience quite like waking up to the sun rising over the horizon hundreds of miles away from the hustle and bustle of modern life on land. There are many facets to being a seafarer, and whilst this book initially started out as a book on onboard safety, it became readily apparent that there was so much else to say that the original concept morphed into an all embracing introduction to the merchant navy. But to keep the book true to its original intent, it is important to dwell a little on the all important aspect of safety. Onboard safety is an area of utmost importance for members of the ship's crew - from the Master down to the Steward and everyone in between. Safety is something which affects everyone equally, no matter what their rank or their role onboard. The safety of the ship and the safety of everyone onboard her is a responsibility shared equally, and if not, the consequences can be dire. From the simplest one man task to the navigation and manoeuvring of the largest ships in the world, safety is at the very heart of being a competent and considerate seafarer. Container ships, oil tankers, gas carriers, car carriers, bulk carriers, offshore support vessels all have their unique characteristics. But whatever the ship and whatever her job, it is the responsibility of the officers and crew to work together. The purpose of this book, therefore, is to introduce the reader to the fundamental aspects of onboard ship operations that can provide a safe working environment for everyone, from the regulations and standards that governs and controls safety to basic measures that can mitigate hazards and risks. This book touches on the shipboard safety organisation, inductions and new crew member familiarisation, safe means of access to enclosed spaces, general housekeeping, risk assessment and risk management, and specific hazardous activities such as cargo loading and unloading, drydocking, drills and what to do in the event of an emergency. This book has not been written as a definitive handbook, but rather as a handrail to introduce the reader to the vast, wide ranging and expansive nature of living and working onboard a modern merchant navy ship. It is absolutely fair to say this book does not introduce anything new. There are no revelations, or industry secrets. No shortcuts to the top. What this book offers is a single point of reference for the general reader, the merchant navy cadet, and the seasoned seafarer, to gain a glimpse of life on the open ocean.By combining and summarising the key aspects, and providing where appropriate case studies of related incidents, it is hoped this book will act as a comprehensive introduction for anyone with a keen interest in the life and work of the merchant navy."--Provided by the publisher.

How Europe underdeveloped Africa / Walter Rodney.
"How Europe Underdeveloped Africa is an ambitious masterwork of political economy, detailing the impact of slavery and colonialism on the history of international capitalism. In this classic book, Rodney make the unflinching case that African poverty is not a natural feature of geography or a consequence of culture, but a direct product of imperial extraction from the continent, a practice that ocntinues into the present. Meticulously researched, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa remains an unshakably relevant study of the so-called great divergence between Africa and Europe, just as it remains a prescient resource for grasping the surge in global inequality today. In this new edition, Angela Davis offers a striking foreword to the book, exploring its lasting contribution to a revolutionary and feminist practice of anti-imperalism."--Provided by the publisher.
