Lifeboats of the Isle of Man / Nicholas Leach.
"The Isle of Man is a key location for the operations of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), which maintains no fewer than five lifeboats around the Manx coastline. These lifeboats cover not only the seas around the island, but also the neighbouring coastlines of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The stories of the Manx lifeboat stations are interwoven with the history of the RNLI, as the charity's founder, Sir William Hillary, was resident in the Manx capital Douglas when he first proposed the founding of a national sea rescue organisation. This comprehensive history covers each of the island's lifeboat stations from their opening up to their current operations, as well as recounting the exploits of Sir William."--Provided by the publisher.

Lusitania : saga and myth /David Ramsay.
An account of the sinking of the passenger liner RMS Lusitania as a result of a German U-Boat attack whilst on a transatlantic crossing to Liverpool from New York in May 1915. 1,199 passengers and crew lost their lives. The event helped to change American attitudes towards Germany and was a factor in the declaration of war by the United States two years later. The author explores the sinking itself and its aftermath, looking in detail at the theories and controversies which surround the sinking, and in particular the inquiries into the event and role of the Lusitania's Captain, William Turner. Supported by photographs and detailed notes.

Maritime painting = Peinture maritime = Maritime malerei = Marinas = Pintura marinha = Maritieme schilderkunst /Daniel Kiecol ; translation into English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch: Textcase.
"Human beings have always been fascinated by the sea and have been navigating the seas, whether for trade or discovery, since the beginning of civilization. As a result, boats and the sea have been depicted from an early age in the visual arts. This volume offers numerous high-quality illustrations that trace the development of maritime art. From the beginnings as a backdrop to other themes, to the time when the Dutch were unrivalled masters of the seas, from the events on the sea depicted by the English to the great studies of nature of the Impressionists."--Provided by the publisher.

Type VII : Germany's most successful u-boats /Marek Krzysztalowicz.
"First conceived in the mid-1930s, the Type VII was still in production in the closing stages of the Second World War a decade later. Subject to continuous improvement through six major variants and with around 650 completed, it was built in larger numbers than any other submarine design in history. It formed the backbone of the Kriegsmarine s campaign against merchant shipping for the whole of the war, and in terms of tonnage sunk was by far the most successful U-boat type."--Back cover.

King George V-class battleships / Daniel Knowles.
"Following the First World War, the major naval powers entered into agreements restricting the construction and number of capital ships. By the late 1920s, the Royal Navy's battle fleet was comprised of the two ships of the Nelson-class, the battlecruisers Hood, Renown and Repulse, as well as the Revenge- and Queen Elizabeth-classes, ships that were largely designed before the First World War. In 1935, with the realisation that its battle fleet was becoming dated, the Royal Navy recommenced planning capital ships within inter-war treaty limitations. The result was the King George V-class battleship. Regarded by some as the worst of the new generation of battleships, the King George V-class were Britain's most modern battleship during the Second World War and saw action in famous engagements such as the sinking of the Bismarck and Scharnhorst to the surrender of Japan."--Provided by the publisher.

This is not America : why black lives in Britain matter /Tomiwa Owolade.
"Across the West, racial injustice has become one of the most divisive issues of our age. In the rush to address inequality and prejudice, and to understand concerns around identity, immigration and colonial history, Britain has followed the lead of the world's dominant power: America. We judge ourselves by America's standards, absorb its arguments and follow its agenda. But what if we're looking in the wrong place? This is Not America is built on the idea that black Britons are British first and foremost, and thus are likely to have more in common with other Britons than with black people in other parts of the world. It argues that too much of the conversation around race in Britain today is viewed through the prism of American ideas that don't reflect the history, challenges and achievements of increasingly diverse black populations at home. To build a long-lasting and more effective anti-racist agenda we must acknowledge that crucial differences exist between Britain and America, and that we are talking about distinct communities and cultures, distinguished by language, history, class, religion and national origin. Humane, empirical and passionate, this book provides a bold new framework for understanding race in Britain today."--Provided by the publisher.

Churchill's Atlantic convoys : tenacity and sacrifice /William Smith.
"Within hours of the outbreak of the Second World War, Winston Churchill took up office as First Lord of the Admiralty. The same day the liner Athenia was torpedoed in the Atlantic in the first U-boat attack of the war. Churchill quickly recognised Britain's survival depended on countering the U-boat threat and the strategic importance of protecting Allied merchant shipping with measures such as the convoy system. As this superbly researched book reveals, the Nazi U-boat fleet was relatively small and unprepared for war in 1939. But by early 1941 its numbers and effectiveness had increasing [sic] to the point that Hitler was able to declare 'our warfare at sea is just beginning'. Prime Minister Churchill's response was to issue his famous 'Battle of the Atlantic' Directive. Churchill's Atlantic Convoys describes the political, strategic and tactical ebb and flow of events, particularly between 1942 and 1943. Thanks to increased numbers and scientific innovations the Allies slowly gained the upper hand despite a determined German fight back in late 1943 and early 1944. While the U-boat threat was never wholly defeated, the tenacity and sacrifices of the Allied naval forces won the day. Churchill later recognised the persistence of Germany's effort and the fortitude of the U-boat service. It would not be until 7 June 1945 that Churchill and President Truman felt able to assert 'the Allies have finished the job'."--Provided by the publisher.

Oriana : a photographic journey /Chris Frame and Rachelle Cross.
"Oriana was the first in a new generation of British-based cruise ships specifically designed for the UK market. She was built by Meyer Werft in Germany and was named by HM the Queen, giving her fame and recognition from day one. Entering service in 1995, Oriana's elegant design and sophisticated on-board ambiance meant she quickly became a firm favourite for cruise passengers both in the UK and abroad. Today, nearly twenty-five years after her launch, she is a much-loved modern classic. Her active cruising schedule has seen her visit ports across the globe including Hong Kong, Sydney and Cape Town, as well as countless calls to Southampton. Written and photographed by well-known maritime history authors Chris Frame and Rachelle Cross, Oriana: A Photographic Journey is an engaging visual tour of this remarkable ship, all from the comfort of your own living room. With Oriana's 2019 departure from P&O Cruises, this book is a must-have keepsake for anyone who has sailed aboard Oriana or seen her during one of her calls, as well as all readers with an appreciation for cruise ships and the sea."--Provided by the publisher.
