Born to be hanged : the epic story of the gentlemen pirates who raided the South Seas, rescued a princess, and stole a fortune /Keith Thomson.
"The year is 1680, in the heart of the Golden Age of Piracy, and more than three hundred daring, hardened pirates-a potent mix of low-life scallywags and a rare breed of gentlemen buccaneers-gather on a remote Caribbean island. The plan: to wreak havoc on the Pacific coastline, raiding cities, mines, and merchant ships. The booty: the bright gleam of Spanish gold and the chance to become legends. So begins one of the greatest piratical adventures of the era - a story not given its full due until now. Inspired by the intrepid forays of pirate turned Jamaican governor Captain Henry Morgan - yes, that Captain Morgan - the company crosses Panama on foot, slashing its way through the Darien Isthmus, one of the thickest jungles on the planet, and liberating a native princess along the way. After reaching the South Sea, the buccaneers, primarily Englishmen, plunder the Spanish Main in a series of historic assaults, often prevailing against staggering odds and superior firepower. A collective shudder racks the western coastline of South America as the English pirates, waging a kind of proxy war against the Spaniards, gleefully undertake a brief reign over Pacific waters, marauding up and down the continent. With novelistic prose and a rip-roaring sense of adventure, Keith Thomson guides us through the pirates' legendary two-year odyssey. We witness the buccaneers evading Indigenous tribes, Spanish conquistadors, and sometimes even their own English countrymen, all with the ever-present threat of the gallows for anyone captured. By fusing contemporaneous accounts with intensive research and previously unknown primary sources, Born to Be Hanged offers a rollicking account of one of the most astonishing pirate expeditions of all time."

"With coverage extending from prehistory to the modern day these six highly illustrated, interdisciplinary volumes are the first definitive reference work covering the cultural history of slavery and human trafficking. Volumes cover: 1. A Cultural History of Slavery and Human Trafficking in the Ancient World (10,000 BCE - 500 CE), 2. A Cultural History of Slavery and Human Trafficking in the Pre-Modern Era (500 - 1450), 3. A Cultural History of Slavery and Human Trafficking in the Age of Encounters (1450 - 1700), 4. A Cultural History of Slavery and Human Trafficking in the Age of Empire (1700 - 1900), 5. A Cultural History of Slavery and Human Trafficking in the Age of Global Conflict (1900 - 1945), 6. A Cultural History of Slavery and Human Trafficking in the Age of Globalization (1945 - present). Bringing together an international cast of over 60 contributors, each volume adopts the same thematic structure, covering: definitions and ideologies of slavery and trafficking; slavery, trafficking, and the law; political cultures; coercive laboring economies; social organization, culture, and ritual; gender, enslavement, and trafficking; age, enslavement, and trafficking; and anti-slavery, anti-trafficking, and abolition outcomes. This model supports readers in tracing one theme throughout history, as well as providing them with a thorough overview of each individual period."

X3 to X54 : the history of the British midget submarine /Keith Hall.
"The X- and XE-Class submarines were conceived during the Second World War: around 51ft (16m) long, they were designed to be towed by a 'mother' submarine and use their small size to complete stealth missions, such as attacking harbours and performing reconnaissance. Although they would not begin active service until 1942, the submarine crews achieved quite the record, racking up 167 honours between them, including four Victoria Crosses. Written by ex-submariner Keith Hall, X3 to X54 is a look at the entire life and evolution of the British midget submarine, from its early prototypes to its final journeys. With a wealth of imagery, including archive X-craft photographs as well as up-to-date views of the X51 (HMS Stickleback) from the Scottish Submarine Centre, this is the fascinating, yet little-known, story of Britain?s midget submarines."

Duel in the deep : the hunters, the hunted, and a high seas fight to the finish /David Sears.
"In autumn 1943 the Battle of the Atlantic, World War II's longest seagoing campaign, reached a new crescendo. Anti-submarine aircraft and ships using new tactics, technologies, weaponry dominated a seascape where German U-boats once ruled supreme. But then unexpectedly, in eerie, mid-ocean darkness, an elemental hull-to-deck, sailor-to-submariner duel erupted. On Halloween Eve, U.S. Navy destroyer Borie, an outmoded, thin-skinned 'tin can' of World War I vintage, set out alone to track down an elusive U-boat. Borie had thus far toiled in the war?s backwaters, her crew of young reservists anxious to prove its mettle. When Borie trapped U-405 on the surface, that chance arrived. As Borie's deck guns unleashed withering fire and U-40's skipper angled his submarine to launch torpedoes, Borie's young skipper - a salesman in civilian life - resorted to the original (and once the only) means of sinking a submarine: ramming, full speed ahead, consequences be damned. Borie's slashing collision with U-405 ignited a swashbuckling, no-holds-barred brawl of cannons, machine guns, small arms, and even knives and spent shell casings. In the wreckage-strewn aftermath, desperate sailors on both sides fought for survival in a heaving, frigid, unforgiving sea. Duel in the Deep weaves together high-stakes strategy and lethal gamesmanship with poignant human backstories, pounding air/surface/subsurface action, epic heroism, and wrenching sacrifice."--

Down to the sea in submarines : a Cold War odyssey /Dan Conley ; foreweord by Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope GCB, OBE, DL.
"This memoir charts the career of the author in the Royal Navy Submarine Service, and in doing so details many of the Silent Service's remarkable achievements since the end of the Second World War. And it provides a dramatic first-hand account of the underwater confrontation during the Cold War between submarines of the West and those of the Soviet Union. Dan Conley narrates the successive stages from his basic submarine training to taking command of two nuclear attack submarines. He sets out in detail what life was like serving onboard submarines, and in particular the book describes the British submariner's remarkable transformation from a kind of buccaneering free spirit, serving on a worn-out WW2 boat during the sunset of the British Empire, to the highly professional individual who spends prolonged periods under the sea in a vessel which matches the complexity of a space craft. The book also sets out the long and difficult challenges encountered in developing effective weapon systems and discusses the difficulties and shortcomings in the UK?s defence procurement system, a situation which still exists today. Ultimately, however, Western technological superiority and crew proficiency enabled the submarines of the Royal and United States Navies to match those of the Soviet Union, and he describes vividly the suspense and tension of underwater confrontations which might so easily have escalated to another terrifyng dimension of warfare. Though the Cold War is in the past, the West now confronts an aggressive, recidivist Russia and a more aggressive China. Britain?s submarine force once again will be key to the security of all its citizens. This fine memoir, while capturing vividly the key events and history of the Cold War, will open the reader's eyes to the significance and importance today of the Royal Navy Submarine Service."

Maritime men of the Asia-Pacific : true-blue internationals navigating labour rights, 1906-2006 /Diane Kirkby with Lee-Ann Monk and Dmytro Ostapenko.
"Maritime workers occupy a central place in global labour history. This new and compelling account from Australia, shows seafaring and waterside unions engaged in a shared history of activism for legally regulated wages and safe liveable conditions for all who go to sea. Maritime Men of the South Pacific provides a corrective to studies which overlook this region's significance as a provider of the world's maritime labour force and where unions have a rich history of reaching across their differences to forge connections in solidarity. From the 'militant young Australian' Harry Bridges whose progressive unionism transformed the San Francisco waterfront, to Australia's successful implementation of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006, this is a story of vision and leadership on the international stage. Unionists who saw themselves as internationalists were also operating within a national and imperial framework where conflicting interests and differences of race and ideology had to be overcome. Union activists in India, China and Japan struggled against indentured labour and 'coolie' standards. They linked with their fellow-unionists in pursuing an ideal of international labour rights against the power of shipowners and anti-union governments. This is a complex story of endurance, cooperation and conflict and its empowering legacy."--Provided by the publisher.

Sub culture : the many lives of the submarine /John Medhurst.
"Sub Culture explores the crucial role of the submarine in modern history, its contribution to scientific progress and maritime exploration, and how it has been portrayed in art, literature, fantasy and film. Ranging from the American Civil War to the destruction of the Kursk, the book examines the submarine's activities in the First and Second World Wars, the Cold War, and in covert operations and marine exploration to the present day. Citing the submarine, particularly the nuclear submarine, as both ultimate deterrent and doomsday weapon, Sub Culture examines how its portrayal in popular culture has reinforced, and occasionally undermined, the military and political agendas of the nation states that deploy it."

Windward family : an atlas of love, loss and belonging /Alexis Keir.
"Twenty years after living there as a child, Alexis Keir returns to the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent. He is keen to uncover lost memories and rediscover old connections. But he also carries with him the childhood scars of being separated from his parents and put into uncaring hands. Inspired by the embrace of his relatives in the Caribbean, Alexis begins to unravel the stories of others who left Saint Vincent, searching through diary pages and newspaper articles, shipping and hospital records and faded photographs. He uncovers tales of exploitation, endeavour and bravery of those who had to find a home far away from where they were born. A child born with vitiligo, torn from his mother's arms to be exhibited as a showground attraction in England; a woman who, in the century before the Windrush generation, became one of the earliest Black nurses to be recorded as working in a London hospital; a young boy who became a footman in a Yorkshire stately home. And Alexis's mother, a student nurse who arrives in 1960s London, ready to start a new life in a cold, grey country - and the man from her island whom she falls in love with. From the Caribbean to England, North America and New Zealand, from windswept islands to the rainy streets of London, and spanning generations of travellers from the 19th century to the present, Windward Family takes you inside the beating heart of a Black British family, separated by thousands of miles but united by love, loss and belonging."

We are displaced : my journey and stories from refugee girls around the world /Malala Yousafzai ; with Liz Welch.
"In this powerful and emotional New York Times bestseller, Nobel Peace Prize winner and activist Malala Yousafzai shares various stories of displacement, including her own. Part memoir, part communal storytelling, We Are Displaced introduces readers to some of the incredible girls Malala has met on her many journeys and lets each tell her story - girls who have lost their community, relatives and often the only world they've ever known, but have not lost hope. Longing for home and fear of an uncertain future binds all of these young women, but each is unique. In a time of immigration crises, war and border conflicts, We Are Displaced is an important reminder that every single one of the 79.5 million currently displaced is a person - often a young person - with dreams for a better, safer world." --Provided by the publisher

The paradoxal compass : Drake's dilemma /Horatio Morpurgo.
"The Paradoxal Compass by Horatio Morpurgo is both historical narrative and environmental manifesto. He compares our own tipping point with the 'great unsettling' faced by the Elizabethans more than four centuries ago. Morpurgo dramatises the perilous hours during which Drake's Golden Hinde was stranded on a reef off the coast of Indonesia, and asks what was really at the heart of Drake's violent quarrel with Fletcher, the ship's chaplain. As the modern world continues to plunder the 'infinite store' of the earth's riches, Morpurgo explores how our abusive relationship with the natural world began. He asks what the Age of Discovery might have to teach us in the current environmental crisis, as we too reappraise our place in the world."

The age of Invincible : the ship that defined the modern Royal Navy /Nick Childs.
"The story of HMS Invincible, a ship whose eventful life story, it is argued, embodies that of the Royal Navy itself during the second half of the 20th century and into the 21st. From her conception and design, through her various deployments (including the Falklands) and her evolving role and technical adaptation to meet changing strategic requirements, her fluctuating fortunes have been intertwined with those of the Royal Navy as a whole. Now, as a new breed of carriers is being commissioned to replace her, this thoroughly researched analysis of her career is the perfect platform from which to ask the important questions regarding the future role of the Royal Navy and Britain's place in the world."--Provided by the publisher.
