Resurrecting Dr. Moss : the life and letters of a Royal Navy surgeon, Edward Lawton Moss MD, RN, 1843-1880 /Paul C. Appleton ; edited by William Barr.
A biography of Edward Lawton Moss, a Royal Navy surgeon, who was born in Ireland in 1843 and went on to serve in the Caribbean, the Arctic, on Canada's Pacific coast and in the Balkans. His first posting, in 1864, to the ship HMS Bulldog, based in the West Indies, was followed by a posting to HMS Simoom in which he served for four years. A shore based appointment at Portland Sick Quarters was followed by an appointment to Esquimalt Naval Base, British Columbia. In 1875-76 he served on HMS Alert under Captain George Strong Nares as part of the British Arctic Expedition to reach the North Pole. Moss died in 1880 following the loss of his ship, HMS Atlanta, in severe weather after leaving Bermuda. The book is illustrated with colour plates of Moss's paintings and photographs. The author has based much of the text on Moss's own letters and provides contextual detail of the conditions in the Navy and the medical challenges facing a surgeon at the time. The work is supported by a bibliography and detailed notes.

Shipbuilding in the United Kingdom : a history of the British Shipbuilders Corporation /Hugh Murphy
"Shipbuilding in the United Kingdom provides a systematic historical account of the British Shipbuilders Corporation, first looking at this major industry under private enterprise, then under state control, and finally back in private hands. The chapters trace the evolution of public policy regarding shipbuilding, ship repair, and large marine engine building through the tenures of radically different Labour and Conservative governments, and through the response of the board of the British Shipbuilders Corporation, trade unions, and local management also. The book benefits from comprehensive archival research and interviews from the 1990s with leading players in the industry, as well as politicians, shipbuilders, trade union leaders, and senior civil servants. This authoritative monograph is a valuable resource for advanced students and researchers across the fields of business history, economic history, industrial history, labour history, maritime history, and British history."--Provided by the publisher.

History of the Adriatic : a sea and its civilization /Egidio Ivetic ; translated by Geraldine Ludbrook.
"The Adriatic is 'the small Mediterranean' - a sea within a sea, part of the Mediterranean and at the same time detached from it, a largely enclosed sea with stunning coastlines and a long history of commercial, political and cultural exchange. Silent witness to the flow of civilizations, the Adriatic is the meeting point of East and West where many empires had their frontiers and some overlapped. With Italy on one side and the Balkans on the other, the Adriatic is the area where the Latin West became intertwined with the Greek and Ottoman East. This book tells the history of the Adriatic from the first cultures of the Neolithic Age through to the present day. All of the great civilizations and cultures that bordered and crossed the Adriatic are discussed: Ancient Greece and Rome, Byzantium and the Holy Roman Empire, Venice and the Ottomans, Catholicism, Orthodox Christianity and Islam. Byzantium was replaced by Venice, queen of the Adriatic, which reached its zenith at the beginning of the sixteenth century and maintained commercial and military hegemony in its Gulf, sharing the sea with the Turks, the Habsburgs, the Pope and the Spanish vice-kingdom of Naples. It was Napoleon who ended Venice's reign in 1797. In the nineteenth century, the Austrian Empire prevailed, and Central Europe reached the Mediterranean through the Adriatic. United Italy placed its most symbolic frontier in the eastern Adriatic, clashing with Austria-Hungary in the First World War. The twentieth century was marked by the prolonged conflicts and eventually peace between Yugoslavia, Albania and Italy. Today the Adriatic is a region increasingly integrated into the European Union, experiencing a new era of cooperation following the dramatic collapse of Yugoslavia. Across centuries, this book illustrates the rich cultural and artistic heritage of diverse civilizations as they left their mark on the cities, shores and states of the Adriatic"--Provided by the publisher.

Victory at sea : naval power and the transformation of the global order in World War II /Paul Kennedy ; with paintings by Ian Marshall.
"In this engaging narrative, brought to life by marine artist Ian Marshall's beautiful full-color paintings, historian Paul Kennedy grapples with the rise and fall of the Great Powers during World War II. Tracking the movements of the six major navies of the Second World War - the allied navies of Britain, France, and the United States and the Axis navies of Germany, Italy, and Japan - Kennedy tells a story of naval battles, maritime campaigns, convoys, amphibious landings, and strikes from the sea. From the elimination of the Italian, German, and Japanese fleets and almost all of the French fleet, to the end of the era of the big-gunned surface vessel, the advent of the atomic bomb, and the rise of an American economic and military power larger than anything the world had ever seen, Kennedy shows how the strategic landscape for naval affairs was completely altered between 1936 and 1946"--Provided by the publisher.

Stena Line / Ian Collard
"The major company in the short-sea passenger and freight business in 2020 is the Swedish Stena Line, which operates services to Europe, Scandinavia and Ireland from United Kingdom ports. The company was founded in 1962 by Sten A. Olsson in Gothenburg, Sweden, and was one of the first ferry operators in Europe to introduce a computer-based reservation system. In the 1980s, Stena took over three other ferry companies and their ships. Various other acquisitions followed, including the Harwich to Hook of Holland route. The company doubled in size in 1990 following its takeover of Sealink British Ferries and Sea Containers. The company became Sealink Stena Line, then Stena Sealink Line, and finally Stena Line."--Provided by the publisher.

Good-bye, good luck : the biography of William McMaster Murdoch
The biography of William McMaster Murdoch (1873-1912). Born in Dalbeattie, Scotland, Murdoch served his apprenticeship on the Charles Cotesworth and joined the White Star Line in 1900 serving on ships in their fleet including the Runic, Arabic, Celtic, Germanic, Oceanic, Cedric, Adriatic and Olympic before joining the Titanic for its maiden voyage as first officer. Murdoch was on the bridge at the time of Titanic's collision with the iceberg and died as a result of the sinking. Rumours and newspaper reports at the time suggested that Murdoch had committed suicide although evidence from his fellow officers confirmed that he had been helping to launch and load lifeboats until entering the water. His body was never found.

The history of celestial navigation : rise of the Royal Observatory and nautical almanacs /P. Kenneth Seidelmann, Catherine Y. Hohenkerk.
"This edited volume charts the history of celestial navigation over the course of five centuries. Written by a group of historians and scientists, it analyzes how competing navigation systems, technologies, and institutions emerged and developed, with a focus on the major players in the US and the UK. The history covers the founding of the Royal Observatory; the first printing of a Nautical Almanac; the founding of the US and UK Nautical Almanac Offices; the creation of international standards for reference systems and astronomical constants; and the impact of 20th century technology on the field, among other topics. Additionally, the volume analyzes the present role and status of celestial navigation, particularly with respect to modern radio and satellite navigation systems. With its diverse authorship and nontechnical language, this book will appeal to any reader interested in the history of science, technology, astronomy, and navigation over the ages."--Provided by the publisher.

The life of William Denny, ship-builder, Dumbarton.By Alexander Balmain Bruce.
The biography of William Denny (1847-1887), born in Dumbarton, the eldest son of Peter Denny, partner in the ship building firm of William Denny and Brothers. Chapters focus on aspects of William Denny's life, including his birth and boyhood, apprenticeship, and admission to the firm as a partner. The author also explores Denny's views on industrial questions of the time, his work as a naval architect and his promotion and use of an experimental tank for testing vessel design. Denny worked on the load-line committee and was also known for his philanthropic work. Further chapters consider Denny's religious beliefs, politics, characteristics and family life. Denny was a director of a subsidiary company La Platense Flotilla, formed with the intention of carrying on a goods and passenger business on the River Plate and its tributaries. Denny visited South America to establish this business, but while there and during protracted negotiations with a competitor, he committed suicide. Much of the text consists of extracts from letters written by Denny to his family, friends and associates.

Pirate enlightenment, or, The real Libertalia / David Graeber.
"The Enlightenment did not begin in Europe. Its true origins lie thousands of miles away on the island of Madagascar, in the late seventeenth century, when it was home to several thousand pirates. This was the Golden Age of Piracy - but it was also, argues anthropologist David Graeber, a brief window of radical democracy, as the pirate settlers attempted to apply the egalitarian principles of their ships to a new society on land. In this jewel of a book, Graeber offers a way to 'decolonize the Enlightenment', demonstrating how this mixed community experimented with an alternative vision of human freedom, far from that being formulated in the salons and coffee houses of Europe. Its actors were Malagasy women, philosopher kings and escaped slaves, exploring ideas that were ultimately to be put into practice by Western revolutionary regimes a century later. Pirate Enlightenment playfully dismantles the central myths of the Enlightenment. In their place comes a story about the magic, sea battles, purloined princesses, manhunts, make-believe kingdoms, fraudulent ambassadors, spies, jewel thieves, poisoners and devil worship that lie at the origins of modern freedom."

Sailing to freedom : maritime dimensions of the Underground Railroad /edited by Timothy D. Walker.
"In 1858, Mary Millburn successfully made her escape from Norfolk, Virginia, to Philadelphia aboard an express steamship. Millburn's maritime route to freedom was far from uncommon. By the mid-nineteenth century, an increasing number of enslaved people had fled northward along the Atlantic seaboard. While scholarship on the Underground Railroad has focused almost exclusively on overland escape routes from the antebellum South, this groundbreaking volume expands our understanding of how freedom was achieved by sea and what the journey looked like for many African Americans. With innovative scholarship and thorough research, Sailing to Freedom highlights little-known stories and describes the less-understood maritime side of the Underground Railroad, including the impact of African Americans' paid and unpaid waterfront labor. These ten essays reconsider and contextualize how escapes were managed along the East Coast, moving from the Carolinas, Virginia, and Maryland to safe harbor in northern cities such as Philadelphia, New York, New Bedford, and Boston."--
