French warships in the age of sail 1786-1861 : design, construction, careers and fates /Rif Winfield & Stephen S Roberts.
"In 1786 the French Navy had just emerged from its most successful war of the eighteenth century, having frequently outfought or outmanoeuvred the Royal Navy in battle, and made a major contribution to American independence. The reputation of its ship design and fighting skills never stood higher, yet within a few years the effects of the French Revolution had devastated its efficiency, leading to defeat after defeat. Fine ships continued to be built, but even under Napoleon's dynamic influence the navy never recovered sufficiently to alter the balance of sea power. It was only after 1815 that the navy revived, espousing technical innovation and invention, to produce some of the most advanced ships of the age. This book is the first comprehensive listing of these ships in English, and follows the pattern set by the companion series on British warships in the age of sail in providing an impressive depth of information. It is organised by Rate, classification and class, with significant technical and building data, followed by a concise summary of the careers of each ship in every class. Thus for the first time it is possible to form a clear picture of the overall development of French warships in the latter half of the sailing era."--Provided by the publisher.

The voyage of Captain John Narbrough to the Strait of Magellan and the South Sea in His Majesty's Ship Sweepstakes, 1669-1671 / edited by Richard J. Campbell with Peter T. Bradley and Joyce Lorimer.
"In 2009, after a public appeal, the British Library purchased a manuscript 'Booke', which Captain Narbrough bought in 1666 and into which he subsequently entered his journals of his voyages and correspondence relating to them. The 'Booke' contains his own fair copy of the journal of his voyage through the Strait of Magellan and north to Valdivia in the Sweepstakes, 1669-1671. This is published here for the first time, together with an incomplete and somewhat different copy of the journal, held in the Bodleian Library, which was made for him by a clerk after he returned to England, and which was partially published in 1694. Both versions of the journal together with previously unpublished records made by members of his company, as well as reproductions of the charts which Narbrough relied on and those he produced, are printed here. Narbrough's mission was to carry out a passenger who referred to himself as Don Carlos Enriques and who claimed to have expert knowledge of Peru and Chile, and contacts with disaffected colonists and indigenous peoples. Don Carlos's written proposals to King Charles II and his ministers, only recently discovered, are here translated from Spanish, and give a clear sense of the character, if not the real identity, of an adventurer, who gave the authorities in England, Chile and Peru totally different and changing stories about his status and the purpose of the voyage."--Provided by the publisher.

The lost story of the Ocean Monarch : Fire, family & fidelity /Gill Hoffs
"The Ocean Monarch was only a few hours out of Liverpool on 24 August 1848 when a cabin passenger shouted "Fire!" and all hell broke loose. Bound for Boston with almost 400 people on board, the emigrant ship was soon ablaze with little chance of putting the flames out. People watched helplessly from their cottages along the Welsh coast as some ships ignored the travellers' plight while others raced to their aid. On the 170th anniversary of the disaster Gill Hoffs reveals the full story of this forgotten wreck, including tales of French royalty, an American artist, and a courageous stewardess who gave her life to save her fellow travellers. Discover what happened to the passengers and crew, including: James K. Fellows, a kindly American jeweller trying to get home to his family; Jotham Bragdon, the first mate who fled the wreck then returned to shore a hero; Mary Walter and her mysterious 'family', escaping danger in London only to find greater peril lay at sea. Follow the murder trial of a crew of rescuers and find out the real fate of their 'victim' - and whether the mysterious Irish toddler 'Kate' found her family again."--Provided by the publisher.

Hurtigruten 120 : the complete story /John Bryant.
The book gives a historical and contemporary account of Hurtigruten known as the Norwegian Coastal Express, which runs a round voyage from Bergen in Norway to Kirkenes. It gives details of the trip itself, and also charts the history of the coastal voyage, now called Hurtigruten ASA, from its beginnings towards the end of the 19th century, to the date of publication (2012). Both colour and black-and-white photographs of the boats and coastline enhance the story and a historical list of many of the vessels is included in the appendix.

Fast passage to Australia : the history of the Black Ball, Eagle, and White Star Lines of Australian packets /by D. Hollett.
This book examines the history of the Black Ball, Eagle and White Star lines against the backdrop of the 1850s Australian gold rush. As emigration rates rose, so did the demand for a fast passage to Australia, and Liverpool-based shipping companies offering Liverpool-Australia routes developed rapidly. Key among these were the firms run by James Baines (the Black Ball Line), Pilkington and Wilson (White Star Line), and Gibbs, Bright and Company. To face off competition from the White Star Line, James Baines and Gibbs, Bright and Company formed a long-standing alliance, and Hollett explores this interconnected history of the three lines. Also examined are the stories of the emigrants making the journey, and the particularly remarkable or tragic voyages they took.

Heaven and earth united : instruments in astrological contexts /edited by Richard Dunn, Silke Ackermann, Giorgio Strano.
"Historically, the idea that the stars and planets influence the Earth and its inhabitants has proved powerful in almost every culture, offering an important context for the use of mathematical and astronomical instruments. In the past, however, historians of astronomy have paid relatively little attention to astrology and other 'non-scientific' topics, while historians of astrology have tended to concentrate on the analysis of texts rather than surviving artefacts, scientific instruments in particular. Heaven and Earth United is an attempt to redress the balance through an exploration of the astrological contexts in which instruments once found a place."--Provided by the publisher

Black flags, blue waters : the epic history of America's most notorious pirates /Eric Jay Dolin.
"Set against the backdrop of the Age of Exploration, Black Flags, Blue Waters reveals the dramatic and surprising history of American piracy's 'Golden Age' -spanning the late 1600s through the early 1700s- when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and beyond. Best-selling author Eric Jay Dolin illustrates how American colonists at first supported these outrageous pirates in an early display of solidarity against the Crown, and then violently opposed them. Through engrossing episodes of roguish glamour and extreme brutality, Dolin depicts the star pirates of this period, among them towering Blackbeard, ill-fated Captain Kidd, and sadistic Edward Low, who delighted in torturing his prey. Also brilliantly detailed are the pirates' manifold enemies, including colonial governor John Winthrop, evangelist Cotton Mather, and young Benjamin Franklin. Upending popular misconceptions and cartoonish stereotypes, Dolin provides this wholly original account of the seafaring outlaws whose raids reflect the precarious nature of American colonial life."--Provided by the publisher.

The Arctic gold rush : the new race for tomorrow's natural resources /Roger Howard.
"On August 2, 2007, a Russian submarine captured world headlines by making a dangerous journey to the bottom of the Arctic seabed and planting a metal, rustfree national flag more than 14,000 feet beneath the North Pole. The aim was to assert Russia's legal sovereignty over a region whose importance had only recently started to become apparent as its melting ice had made, or was expected to make, vast natural resources open to exploitation. The latest estimates are that the region holds around 13% of the world's undiscovered oil and as much as 30% of undiscovered natural gas reserves that would be hugely profitable for any country that managed to secure control over them. Gold, platinum, copper, and other precious metals have also been found along the coast. Neighboring countries - Russia, the United States, Canada, Denmark, and Norway - are already doing everything they can to mark out new borders. The ensuing political disagreements over the issue are already rife. In particular, games of political intrigue between Moscow and Washington are being played out in the region. But as the world's resources become increasingly scarce and valuable, could the scramble for Arctic resources become violent? Could a 'War for the Arctic' be fought?"--Provided by the publisher.

Scotland's secret history : the illicit distilling and smuggling of whisky /Charles MacLean and Daniel MacCannell ; compiled and edited by Marc Ellington.
"Illicit distilling in Scotland was seen as a 'right of man' at the end of the 17th century. Attempts to enforce excise duty on the spirit were therefore met with resistance, ranging from riots to more and more ingenious ways of avoiding paying tax. In this book and Charles MacLean and Daniel MacCannell give a fascinating insight into the day-to-day struggles that led to the increase in illicit distilling from the mid-1600s, then to its eventual demise in the early twentieth century. The Cabrach, a wild and sparsely populated part of Aberdeenshire, became renowned for its production of illicit whisky. Local inhabitants mixed farming and distilling with great skill, creating a network of stills and distribution to evade customs. Using new research first-hand historical accounts and official records, the authors show how spirits from this small parish were made and travelled far and wide, across the border to England and across the North Sea to France, firing up revolution and lending solidarity to the struggles of the Jacobites - and making many rich in the process."--Provided by the publisher.

"This book follows the author through his experiences from the end of his apprenticeship in 1961 with The London Graving Dock Co. on the Isle of Dogs, now generally known as Canary Wharf, to his time in the Merchant Navy as an engineer. Those were the days of what could be considered the last generation of 'hands-on engineers' who maintained the ships' engine rooms by the senses of sight, sound and feel, often with a bit of blood and always plenty of sweat. In those days the working conditions down below would have given today's 'health and safety' brigade apoplexy. However, it would be hard to find a ship's engineer from those halcyon times that didn't consider his time at sea as the happiest time of his life."--Provided by the publisher.
