Cunard : a photographic history /Janette McCutcheon.
This illustrated history of the Cunard line features over 200 illustrations, most of which were previously unpublished. These include artwork from Cunard advertising material, drawings, photographs, and souvenirs such as menus and tickets. The story of Cunard is recounted, from sucessful beginnings in the Atlantic and competition with the White Star Line; its losses and recovery after World War One, including developing the 'Queens'; its failing fortunes after World War Two; and its rise from strength to strength after the purchase of the Kvaerner line.

Fighting the Great War at sea : strategy, tacticts and technology /Norman Friedman.
"The overriding image of the First World War is the bloody stalemate of the Western Front, but although much of the action did occur on land, the overall shape of the war - even the inevitability of British participation - arose out of its maritime character. It was essentially a struggle about access to worldwide resources, most clearly seen in the desperate German attempts to deal with the American industrial threat, which ultimately levered the United States into the war, and thus a consequence of British sea control. This radical new book concentrates on the way in which each side tried to use or deny the sea to the other, and in so doing it describes rapid wartime changes not only in ship and weapon technology but also in the way naval warfare was envisaged and fought. Combat produced many surprises: some, like the impact of the mine and torpedo, are familiar, but this book also brings to light many previously unexplored subjects, like creative new tactical practices and improved command and control.rn The contrast between expectation and reality had enormous consequences not only for the course of the war but also for the way navies developed afterwards. This book melds strategic, technical, and tactical aspects to reveal the First World War from a fresh perspective, but also demonstrates how its perceived lessons dominated the way navies prepared for the Second."--Provided by the publisher.

The Blue Star Line : a history of the of the vessels of the company with photographs, cachets & covers /by Mike Dovey & Ken Bottoms.
"This publication is based on the fantastic work of Society member Ken Bottoms who built a database for the Blue Star Line list of vessels that cannot be equalled. It was supplemented by the co-author who found over 620 superb photo-graphs of the vessels, many of which must be seen to be believed. Add to this the philatelic element of showing the majority of vessels with covers used by paquebot from around the world and we have a book that will stand the test of time for years to come, and for content will probably never be beaten."--Provided by the publisher.

The boats of men of war / Commander W E May, with additions from Simon Stephens
"In the age of sail, the boats carried by the men-of-war were an essential part of the ship's outfitting. They were necessary to move stores, act as the "engine" in confined waters, serve as amphibious raiders, and even to cruise independently as tenders to the mother ship. Over the centuries there have been many sizes, hull forms, and rigs employed, so the exact details proved a problem for model makers, marine artists, and builders of replicas. This new book, based on a work originally published in 1974, is still the only study of the whole history of this neglected topic. Now revised, expanded and much more thoroughly illustrated, it covers the boat 'establishments' (the sizes and types of boat formally allocated), the methods of hoisting and stowing them aboard ship, the design and construction of the boats themselves, their fittings, rigs and armament - guns, howitzers, and even Congreve rockets. With the largest collection of original naval boat draughts ever published, this new edition will be warmly welcomed by ship modellers and historians of the world's navies, as well as all small-craft enthusiasts."--Provided by the publisher.

British mail steamers to South America, 1851-1965 : a history of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company and Royal Mail Lines /by Robert E. Forrester.
A business history of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company (later Royal Mail Lines), which from 1851 provided a mail service between Britain and South America. The author explores the wider political and economic context, covers the development of Argentina and Brazil as trading nations, and changes in ship design leading to the development of greater cargo capacities. He also looks at the importance of the refrigerated meat trade and the growth of passenger services. Facing the challenges of international competition, air travel and containerisation, the company ran into serious financial difficulties and was finally acquired by Furness, Withy & Co in 1965. Tables chart the changing trade conditions and financial position of the company. A fleet list covering the period 1851-1965 is included.

The quiet revolution of Caroline Herschel : the lost heroine of astronomy /Emily Winterburn.
"Caroline Herschel was a prolific writer and recorder of her private and academic life, through diaries, autobiographies for family members, notebooks and observation notes. Yet for reasons unknown she destroyed all of her notebooks and diaries from 1788-1797. As a result, we have almost no record of the decade in which she made her most influential mark on science when she discovered eight comets and became the first woman to have a paper read at the Royal Society. ... By piecing together - from letters, reminiscences and museum objects - a detailed account of the time, we get to see a new side to history's 'most admirable lady astronomer' and one of the greatest pioneering female scientists of all time."--Provided by the publisher.

Blackbeard : the real pirate of the Caribbean /Dan Parry
"The book accompanies a multi-million pound BBC factual drama that explores the reality of the man behind the beard. Far from the caricature of films and novels, Blackbeard was a complex character, as charming as he was ruthless. The atrocities he indulged in, and how they eventually proved to be his undoing, are here explored through a fresh appraisal of surviving contemporary documents."--Provided by the publisher.
