'Britannia' getting underway; illustration to Falconer's 'The Shipwreck' (1811 ed., f.p.xlvi)

The third of a series of ten drawings, of which the NMM collection holds nine (PAF5913–PAF5921). The printed description of the plate based on it, probably written by Pocock, reads: 'The Bay and Town of Candia, taken from the North-West. The Ship appears under weigh: the Top-sails are hoisted: the Yards braced, ready for casting; to accelerate which, the Jib is set: the Anchor appears in sight, the Catblock hooked, and the Seamen forward, hauling it to the Cathead.' Signed by the artist and dated, lower right. For further details see the first of the series, PAF5913: for an anonymous early copy of this one, better indicating its now faded original colour, see PAJ1640. Exhibited: NMM Pocock exhib. (1975) no. 35.
