Head of the 'Sandwich' 1679

A depiction of part of the head and bulkhead of a ship’s head, taken from the starboard side showing the figurehead of a crowned lion with a small figure on its back. On the verso is a very faint offset showing a royal yacht, possibly the ‘Charlotte’, viewed from close on the starboard bow.

Inscribed ‘sanwits’ the ship depicted on the recto was named Sandwich on her launching in 1678, built by contract in William Castle's private yard at Deptford in 1678 as a part of the "Thirty Ships" programme of 1677. Van de Velde the Younger made several drawings inscribed with that name. This is an unsigned pencil drawing, rapidly drawn in thick pencil.

The king soon realised, however, that it was a possible faux-pas to name only a third-rate after the deceased Earl of Sandwich when two of the new second-rates had been named after other naval and military officers Albemarle and Ossory. Sandwich was therefore reserved as a name for another new second-rate, and this third-rate renamed ‘Hope’.
