This drawing, which depicts only Dutch shipping, may be related to the composition of a painting. Van de Velde painted a number of pictures with similar compositions in the mid 1660s, before he came to England, so it is possible that the drawing may date from this period, although there may be stylistic or technical reasons suggesting a later date. It has a signature 'W V Velde' but this may be false. It is also possible that another artist may have made additions to the drawing.
