H.M.S. Captain Double Turret & Double Screw Ironclad, Captain H.T. Burgoyne V.C... turned bottom upwards in a Gale, and sank in three minutes in the Bay of Biscay on the 7th of Septr 1870

This ship was built by Lairds Bros. in Birkenhead and her maiden voyage began on Saturday 29th January when she was accompanied by HMS Valorous as she sailed from the Mersey. She sheltered in Holyhead on that Saturday night before proceeding to Portsmouth for an Admiralty survey. Her time as a warship was only 7 months. [Information supplied by Mr Gareth Hughes]
