Portrait of Sir Francis Vere (1560?-1604) by William Faithorne the Elder.
Considered one of the best army officers of his day, Vere joined the royal army sent by Elizabeth I to aid the Dutch republic in 1585. From August 1589 Vere was in sole charge of the English army of assistance in the Dutch republic.
