The Rt Honble Earl Howe, Adml of the White and Commander in Chief of the Channel Fleet. Engraved for the Register of the Times

An oval bust-length portrait of Richard Howe, Earl Howe (1726–1799) in naval uniform and a cockade hat. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘The Rt. Honble. Earl Howe Adml. of the White and Commander in Chief of the Channel Fleet.’ Also lettered with the production and publication details: ‘Engraved for the Register of the Times. / Bone del. / Walker sculp. / Published July 1st 1794 by B. Crosby, Stationers Court, Ludgate Street.’ This print was published by Benjamin Crosby as an illustration for ‘The Register of the Times, or Political Museum’, volume 1 (1794). However, Crosby published an apology for the engraving in his prospectus for the next issue (number III) of the journal. He wrote: ‘We are extremely sorry, that in our anxiety to give our readers in the last Number a plate of this gallant Admiral, who had so recently distinguished himself, we had not sufficient time to rent it so complete as we intended. To remedy, however, this failure, we have obtained another correct design, and have it now engraving, by a most eminent artist, which will be given, gratis, in the Fifth Number, in such a manner as, we trust, will amply compensate for the defects of the former.’ The new plate was published on 31 July 1794 (see PAD8356). (Updated June 2019.)
