Horizontal dial
Portable horizontal dial for 51° North. The brass dial-plate is circular and has an open centre, and two semicircular strips support the gnomon. The hour scale is numbered clockwise, there is a three mm gap in the scale at noon and the gnomon is fixed and of a very simple design. It is signed 'Abraham . Bath' on the hour-circle.
This is probably part of a horizontal dial similar to that in the Whipple collection (accession no. Wh: 1670) which is set over a compass in a square mahogany box.
For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
