The Prospect of the English Castle at Anamabou

This early engraving shows vividly the frontier mentality of Europeans when they thought of Africa. The English castle dominates the picture, overshadowing the other buildings of Anamabou. The castle and its oversized flag help to suggest the security and authority of this British outpost. 'Africa' is portrayed as less inviting, the beach surrounded by dangerous looking reefs while behind the castle, what appears to be an impenetrable forest extends to the horizon.
