View of the Entrance of St John's Harbour, Newfoundland. From Fort Townshend, 1823
Print. The artist P.C. le Geyt was the Secretary to Admiral Sir Charles Hamilton (1767-1842), Governor of Newfoundland from 1818 to 1823. Whether 'Miss M. le Geyt' who transferred his sketch to the stone for this lithograph was his sister or his daughter is not yet clear. She may have done the same for other Newfoundland views and certainly one of 'Woodlands Cottage, Woodlands Lake, near St. John’s Newfoundland' which, in that case, was 'drawn from Nature by Lady Hamilton'. Born Henrietta Martha Drummond and married in 1803, Lady Hamilton was herself an accomplished amateur artist. We are grateful to Chris O’Dea of St John's, Newfoundland, for supplying information in relation to other copies of both prints. [PvdM 3/21]
