Diptych dial

Diptych dial for latitude 48° North. Rectangular miniature ivory dial consisting of two leaves that fold together when not in use. All the markings are in black. Leaf Ia has single and double-lined borders and a poppy flower is engraved in each corner. Leaf Ib has a double-lined border and a six-pointed geometrical design engraved in a double circle. Leaf IIa features a horizontal dial surrounding the compass with an hour scale numbered clockwise 5-12, 1-7. The compass card is printed, has a centrally engraved rose and eight points are marked. It has a fleur-de-lys indicating North and is offset 5° West of North to allow for magnetic variation. The needle is blued for South, is rather rusty and is surmounted by a brass cylindrical pivot. A glass plate covers all. Attached between the inner surfaces of the two leaves is a green string gnomon. Leaf IIb has single and double-lined borders and a poppy flower engraved in each corner. The leaves have two brass hook fasteners and brass hinges.

The poppy-flower decoration suggests that this dial was made in Dieppe, since the makers from that town often used this form of ornament. The latitude, however, would be more suitable for Paris. The compass card may be a replacement.
