Horizontal dial

Portable horizontal dial for latitude 49° North. The dial-plate is oval shaped. On the obverse side, the hour scale is depicted on a scroll, has an acanthus flower in its centre and is marked 'pour 49 degrez' (for 49 degrees). The gnomon is hinged, pierced, decorated with leaf decoration and folds flat when not in use. The compass, offset 3° West of North to allow for magnetic variation, has cardinal points marked by crossed lines, named in French. The needle is blued, has an open circle for North and is surmounted by a brass pyramidal pivot. There is a glass plate over all. The dial-plate is supported by the compass bowl and two turned silver legs. On the reverse side is a gnomon brace and acanthus decoration.

The dial is signed, 'Jacques Thoury AParis'. It is very similar in style to AST0496 and it is the only known instrument signed by Thoury, who worked in Paris in the second half of the 17th century. The gnomon may be a later addition, since it is constructed for the wrong latitude (39°).
