Compass dial

Compass dial for latitude 49° North. This brass dial is set over a compass in an ivory box. The box has a screw-top ivory lid inside of which is a brass lunar volvelle. The dial-plate consists of a brass ring carrying an hour scale and an arc to support the gnomon in the centre. The compass consists of printed and painted card and has 32 points (though the band around the edge is divided to 64 by alternating black and white markings). Inside this is a centrally placed flower. There is a blued needle, with an arrowhead for North and a diamond for South, surmounted by a brass pyramidal pivot. A glass plate is set over all.

The lunar volvelle has a fixed disc on which is a lunar-age scale and an hour scale. Atop of this is a rotatable disc with a pointer and an hour scale. The disc is pierced by a circle to allow for a visual representation of the moon's phase. The ivory is fluted on the box and lid, and both the top of the lid and the bottom of the base carry a circular woven design, while the lid has a central flower.

This instrument is very similar in style to AST0350 and was probably also made in Nuremberg. The ivory is elaborately carved, demonstrating the maker's skill. Engraved on the dial-plate are the unidentified initials 'I T'.
