Captain William Bligh, 1754-1817
The original pastel portrait by Russell - which is not in oval format - with its pair of Bligh's wife Elizabeth (nee Betham), is now in the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, Whitby, to which both were allocated in 2002 after they were accepted by HM Treasury as acquisitions for the nation in lieu of estate duty. His was first published, as shown here, as the frontispiece to his second and fuller account of the 'Bounty' expedition, 'A Voyage to the South Sea....' (1792). He is shown in captain's unifom but rose to Vice-Admiral of the Blue by the time of his death.
