On the Dogger Bank. Pall Mall Magazine
Mounted with PAD6149-PAD6150. A reproduction of Stanfield's 'A Dutch dogger carrying away her sprit' (exh. R.A., 1846) commonly known as 'On the Dogger Bank', the opening of the verse epigraph attached to it (reputedly an 'old song' but perhaps by Stanfield himself) when first exhibited at the Royal Academy in that year. The original is in the Jones Bequest at the V & A: Stanfield did paint a slightly smaller oil replica which is still in circulation. [PvdM 9/04]
