Passengers on Herschel Island, Canada, looking at an up-turned canoe and the whaling settlement.
A general view of the passengers on Herschel Island, Canada to look at the remains of the settlement when it was a major over-wintering site for the whaling fleet. In the background are the Canada Customs Warehouse and Northern Whaling & Trading Company Store buildings. The passengers are looking at an up-turned canoe resting on trestles.
The Kapitan Dranitsyn (1975) anchored off Pauline Cove near the abandoned whaling settlement on Herschel Island. Ivy Sharp recorded: 'At Herschal [sic] Island we saw various whalers' huts some built in the 19th century and the rest about 1926. There were various areas surrounded by staves intended for whalers to erect their tents, the wood operating as wind breaks.'
