A view of the tent staves on Herschel Island with the Kapitan Dranitsyn (1975) in the distance.
An example of the drift wood staves used to surround the tents erected by whalers at Pauline Cove on Herschel Island. These are propped up on a wooden or metal structure to act as a wind break. In the distance, on the left, is the Kapitan Dranitsyn (1975) at anchor.
The Kapitan Dranitsyn (1975) anchored off Pauline Cove near the abandoned whaling settlement on Herschel Island. Ivy Sharp recorded: 'At Herschal [sic] Island we saw various whalers' huts some built in the 19th century and the rest about 1926. There were various areas surrounded by staves intended for whalers to erect their tents, the wood operating as wind breaks.'
