A view of the three water tanks outside the Bonehouse at Pauline Cove, Herschel Island

The three water tanks outside the west wall of the Bonehouse at Pauline Cove on Herschel Island. These tanks were filled with ice from the lake by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) who stayed at the settlement until 1964. The Bonehouse was originally built in the mid 1890s as a storehouse for baleen, also called “whalebone”. After 1906, this structure was used by the police for storage. The Canadian national flag can be seen painted onto the red corrugated iron roof.

The Kapitan Dranitsyn (1975) anchored off Pauline Cove near the abandoned whaling settlement on Herschel Island. Ivy Sharp recorded: 'At Herschal [sic] Island we saw various whalers' huts some built in the 19th century and the rest about 1926. There were various areas surrounded by staves intended for whalers to erect their tents, the wood operating as wind breaks.'
