Looking down at one of the Zodiac RIBs taken from the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980).

Looking down at one of the Zodiac RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boat) taken from on board the ice breaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (1980) before it took passengers to Beechey Island. One of the crew is standing up at the back of the RIB holding onto the throttle arm and leaning on the cover of the 40HP Yamaha engine. A spare fuel can is lashed down in the bows. By 1 August the ship was steaming up Peel Sound into Barrow Strait with the intention of visiting Cunningham Inlet on the north coast of Somerset Island, although they eventually went straight to Beechey Island, near Devon Island.

Ivy Sharp mentioned in her account: 'Plans have changed and we are going to Beechey Island by zodiac, but once again the sea is very shallow, there is a strong wind and it is scheduled to be another wet ride.'
