The replacement grave marker for John Torrington (d.1846) on the foreshore of Beechey Island, Barrow Strait.
A close-up of the replacement wooden grave marker for John Torrington, who died on 1 January 1846 and was buried on Beechey Island. Torrington was Leading Stoker on HMS Terror, one of the exploration ships of the 1845 Northwest Passage Expedition under the command of Sir John Franklin. In the background is another grave marker with the same text, except the additional information about the original being removed.
The maker has a brass plaque screwed to it that states: 'Sacred to / the memory of / John Torrington / who departed this life / January 1st A.D. 1846 / on board of / H.M. Ship Terror / Aged 20 years. / This marker is a replica. / The original is housed at the / Prince of Wales / Northern Heritage Centre, / Yellowknife, N.W.T. / 1993'
