Wooden cenotaph monument to those who died searching for the 1845 Northwest Passage Expedition on Beechey Island, Barrow Strait.
The bleached wooden octagonal cenotaph monument with mounted ball erected by the 1852-54 Franklin Search Expedition, led by Sir Edward Belcher. It was made in memory of Sir John Franklin and to thirteen men who died searching for him, including Lieutenant Bellot of the French Navy. In the distance is the steep scree slope and cliffs of Beechey Island.
The large curved marble tablet mounted on the cenotaph above the stacked flat rocks commemorates Lieutenant Joseph-Rene Bellot, who drowned in 1853.
