A starboard broadside view of 'Alert' (1856) stopped in the ice in Buchanan Bay, Hayes Sound, on the night of 5 August 1875. Taken from 'Discovery' (1873) looking northwest. Both ships became beset in the ice at about 3pm and remained with sails set, even though there was little wind.
