Unidentified warship
Scale: 1:48. Plan showing the head, headrails, trail-board and figurehead for an unidentified warship. This figurehead design has similarities to DIC0039 for HMS Invincible (1808) and another unidentified figurehead (DIC0090), showing a man with his right arm raised holding thunderbolts and a sceptre(?) in his left hand.
The full-length figurehead is a male striding forward with a sceptre in his left arm and thunderbolts in his right hand that is raised above his head. The figure is wearing a crown and possibly is only clothed in a billowing cloak fixed by a broach at his neck and collected at his waist by an ornate belt. He is wearing leather ‘gladiator-style’ sandals that go up to the top of his calves. At his feet are large clouds with thunderbolts. The rest of the trail-board includes acorns and oak leaves, and a stylised palm frond. The figurehead may represent Zeus, who in Greek mythology was the god of the sky and lightning, as well as king of the gods on Mount Olympus.
