Allegorcial sketch of St John the Evangelist
A pen and wash sketch of the apotheosis of St John the Evangelist rising heavenward with an eagle below he legs. The eagle was a symbolic representation of St John. Behind him is a large book, a reference to his writings, held up by an angel. To his left are two angels, one holding a flaming torch. St John is holding a quill pen in his left hand above an ink well raised up in the hand of another sitter below his feet. At the bottom of the image are two cherubs on a cloud with their arms around each other and cuddled closed together. At the bottom of the illustration is the lower half of an archangel.
The sketch may have been done as a commission for a church.
