This watercolour shows a stern view of the Norwegian-built three-master barque ‘Svend Foyn’ at anchor with a buoy in the right foreground. The ship’s name and port of registry, ‘Skien’, are inscribed on the vessel.

The ‘Svend Foyn’ was built in 1868 and only was only registered at Skien in the period 1905–7 when under the ownership of Akties Svend Foyn and managed by N. F. Bye of Skien. The ship was sold in 1907 to Fredrikstad owners and was severely damaged in the North Sea in August 1908 while on a voyage from Boulogne to Sarpsborg with limestone. The vessel was brought into Cuxhaven but declared a total loss and broken up, being deleted from Lloyd's Register 1909.
