A group of six fishing people
This figure study shows four men, a woman and a boy around an upturned basket negotiating a deal. A man seated on a smaller basket is using the larger basket as a table to count out money with a woman on the opposite side, who is accompanied by a boy. The other men are bystanders.
The unsigned drawing’s stylistic resemblance to drawings of similar subjects from the Milford Collection, now at the NMM, suggest a tentative attribution to Willem van de Velde, the Elder, and a date of about 1655.
