A flagship becalmed firing a salute

To the right in this compositional drawing is a starboard quarter view of a ship with a flag at the main and sails loosed. The ship fires a salute to port as a small boat pulls away towards the left. Several other vessels are visible in the background.

Inscribed in ink: ‘W.V.V.J’ (possibly a later addition or false signature). An old mount carried the inscription: ‘Acheté à Paris dans une vente le 6 mai 1909’.
