Profile portrait of Nelson
This graphite drawing is a copy of a well-known portrait of Nelson by Simon de Koster. A note associated with the drawing reads: ‘Done by my Dear Father & Sir Thomas Hardy had the fellow one to it & said it was “the best likeness of Nelson he had ever possessed” – Ann Alldridge’. Ann Aldridge was born at Yarmouth in 1808. Her father, whom she identifies as the artist of the drawing, was Thomas Alldridge, a naval purser who is known to have corresponded with Nelson. The drawing was later owned by his son (Ann's younger brother), naval officer George Manley Alldridge.
