The York Convict Hulk in Portsmouth Harbour with another hulk beyond
This drawing is inscribed by the artist 'The York Convict Hulk and lazaretto, Portsmouth Harbour, July 4 1831'. The further inscription on the mount stating it is from the collection of J. R. Cooke is in the hand of John Munday, formerly of NMM and the modern biographer of Cooke, who knew various Cooke descendants over many years. Essentially the drawing repeats the composition, (but presumably on the spot at a later date) of the engraving of the 'York' dated 1828 which forms part of Cooke's series 'Shipping and Craft' , completed in 1829. For the related print see PAF3148. [PvdM 3/10]
