Plymouth, hulks near Turnchapel
On the left, viewed aground at Turnchapel, Plymouth, are two hulks. The partial view of the left-hand hulk's heavily damaged topsides does not permit any identification, whereas the relatively good condition of the next vessel to the right, shown stern towards the camera, suggests a large fishing vessel laid up more recently, with masts cut to stumps and rigging removed. The vessel is 'canoe-sterned' with a deep, straight sternpost, and heavily flared topsides. A heavy winch remains on the foredeck. To the right of this hulk is moored a Tamar sailing barge, its transom nearest the camera. It is rigged with a short mast and has its rudder shipped. Its cargo hold is canvas-covered and extends over almost the entire area aft of the mast. In the distance aground in the Cattewater creek are what appear to be two topsail schooners.
