White t-shirt with blue ‘Save the Arctic’ design over a heart-shaped globe
White t-shirt with blue ‘Save the Arctic’ design over a heart-shaped globe, designed by Vivienne Westwood for sale by Greenpeace. Original edition. The t-shirt features web links to www.savethearctic.org and www.activeresistance.org, as well as Vivienne Westwood's iconic Orb logo.
Greenpeace's 'Save the Arctic' campaign was launched in 2012 to raise awareness against oil drilling and unsustainable fishing in Arctic areas. One of Greenpeace's actions as part of the campaign was to directly protest oil drilling by boarding the Prirazlomnaya platform, operated by Gazprom, in the Arctic. 28 Greenpeace activists and 2 journalists were detained by Russian authorities, as well as the Greenpeace vessel the 'Arctic Sunrise'. This act led to global media attention, including some of the activisits being initially charged with piracy.
Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, alongisde designer Sadie Frost, created the t-shirt design to be used in the campaign. In 2015, a photo exhibition showing 60 portraits of celebrities wearing the iconic t-shirt took place in London Waterloo underground station, situated purposefully along the escalators leading to the London headquarters of Shell, an oil company that has also started drilling in the Arctic.
