The Dutch three-decker Prins Wilhelm III
A grisaille painting of the ‘Prins Willem III’ at sea, with her ship’s boat on her right, among a fleet of other Dutch men-of-war. She is shown on the right of the image in port quarter view flying the Dutch flag. Grisaille.
L.G. Carr Laughton’s ‘Old ship figure-heads & sterns’ has an illustration by Cecil King, painted from a model in the Scheepvaart Museum, of a ship called ‘Prins Willem’ dated 1651; but this model, although the decoration is not dissimilar to that on the ship in the present picture, is of a smaller ship. Moreover, the dates of the ship recorded here maker her a likely subject for Pieter Vogelaer.
