'Bombarding Turkish Batteries at Chanak'; Dardanelles, probably on 19 February 1915

Signed by artist, lower right, this appears to represent the bombardment of the outer forts of the Dardanelles between 17.00 and 17.26 on 19 February 1915. The British battleship 'Cornwallis' is prominent on the left with the battlecruiser 'Inflexible' far left, next to her: the battleship 'Agamemnon' is on the right and all three are firing to starboard. Steam picket boats are in the foreground. In the background closer inshore is the French squadron, comprising the old battleships 'Suffren' and 'Bouvet', and with the 'Gaulois' nearest to the British 'Agamemnon'. A second bombardment took place involving the same ships on 25 February, however, and further confusion of the exact date shown was added by Wyllie when he reproduced the drawing in colour in his and M.F. Wren's 'Sea Fights of the Great War' (1918) f. p. 148: there he used the title quoted above but also gave the date as 18 March 1915 in the printed caption, although his text makes no mention of the 'Cornwallis' being involved on that third and final occasion. At present one can only suggest 19 February as the more likely date of the first two, though the general impression of the drawing probably applies to all three - that in March being 'a beautiful spring day, with bright sun and a calm sea' according to the accompanying text (p. 147).
