Emma Hart, 1765-1815, later Lady Hamilton, as Cassandra
original art: drawing. Inscribed below image 'Cassandra (Portrait of the celebrated Lady Hamilton)'. An attached label also states: 'Drawn on blotting paper by Romney and given by him to Meyer one of the original Academicians [Jeremiah Meyer 1735-89]. From him it passed to his relations the Haverfields and later came into the hands of their relation Miss Blackley who left it to me, L.B.L.' It is apparently on a coarse and perhaps absorbent laid paper rather than 'blotting paper', which did not exist in Romney's time. Meyer was a friend of Romney's, a well-known miniaturist and one of the earliest Royal Academicians. [PvdM 3/05]
