Star Fish, Caught in a Trawl off Ushant / View outside the Needles

One side of this sheet features front and back views of two different species of starfish (possibly a cushion starfish and a common starfish), inscribed ‘Star Fish / Caught in a Trawl off Ushant’. On The other side is a watercolour of two sailing vessels at sea off the Needles on the Isle of Wight. These drawings are the work of naval officer Aiskew Paffard Hollis (1764–1844). Hollis was stationed with the Channel Fleet in the ‘Andromeda’ from August 1790 to October 1793 and the ‘Queen’ from October 1793 to November 1796 and may have had the opportunity to trawl off Ushant during that time. For other examples of his work, see PAH4885 and ZBB0352–84.
