Brick Kilns in Stokes Bay, from the Gate of Gomer Lane

Two drawings on separate sheets of paper, which were found together in ZBB0355. One drawing is a rough pencil sketch showing a view through a gate with trees in the left foreground. Two tall brick kilns are visible in the distance. Inscribed, top right, ‘Brick Kilns in Stokes Bay, from the Gate of Gomer Lane’. This refers to the brickworks at Stokes Bay, Gosport. The other drawing is a rough sketch of a tree. These drawings are the work of naval officer Aiskew Paffard Hollis (1764–1844), whose family came from Alverstoke at the eastern end of Stokes Bay. For other examples of Hollis’s work, see PAH4885 and ZBB0352–84.
