Prison hulks in Portsmouth harbour

This was formerly attributed as 'style of Daniel Turner' as was BHC1924, which is a different treatment of the same subject. It is in fact a version of the very similar Garneray oil which is now BHC1923, and BHC1924 is also probably by Garneray although simpler and in a much bluer palette. This one has slight but interesting variations from BHC1923. In the distance on the left, both show what appears to be a considerable area of dried brushwood or similar ochre-coloured vegetation, which is probably a store of fuel for 'breaming' ships' hulls (burning off marine growth) as part of the repair and refit work carried out at Portsmouth: as a considerable fire risk, this is shown stored outside the dockyard and town area. Just below it is a large twin-masted lateen-rigged boat, which does not appear in BHC1923: this may be connected with the Spanish two-decker moored on the far right, which also appears in BHC1923, but here flies a commodore's pennant rather than a plain rectangular flag at the maintopmast head. A friendly Spaniard visiting Portsmouth would only have been possible after Spain allied with Britain against Napoleon in mid-1808, suggesting an earliest date for both versions of the picture. However, at least one other lateen rig is shown in both pictures, so both may be illustrations of British naval 'sail-training' in unusual rigs within the sheltered waters of the harbour. The artist, Garneray, was a French naval prisoner in the Portsmouth hulks from 1806 to 1814 and painted a considerable number of pictures of this subject for sale to help supplement his rations, in the same way as other prisoners made models for sale. After his release and return home, he became a very well-known marine artist in France and their first 'Peintre officiel de la Marine'. For further stylistic discussion of the composition, see BHC1923.
