View of two sailing vessels possibly cargo carrying barges, with fainter vessels and a windmill in the background
One side of this page features a graphite drawing, with watercolour, of a spritsail stackie barge with a large stack of hay on the deck and another vessel alongside. To the left is a three-masted barque being towed by a paddle tug. This drawing appears to have been crossed out with diagonal hatching. There is also a drawing of a windmill on the right.
On the other side of the page is a study in graphite and ink of a paddle steamer moored alongside another vessel. The steamer’s name, ‘Swift’, and port of registry, ‘London’, are inscribed on the stern. The ‘Swift’ was built at Stockton-on-Tees for the General Steam Navigation Company in 1875. It operated between London and Ostend with passengers and cargo and was broken up in 1902. This identification is confirmed by her overall size, the fitting of lifeboats in davits and the auxiliary schooner rig.
