John Harrison...Inventor of the Compound Pendulum & of several Time Keepers...
Portrait.
After Thomas King's 1767 oil portrait, in the collection of the Science Museum, London (ZBA2249). The timekeeper in the gimballed table case behind Harrison is 'H3'. In the original portrait Harrison's right hand holds the watch he had made by John Jeffreys for work on H3 but which then inspired the change of direction that led him to develop H4. The latter was complete and famous by the time the print was made so the engraver was asked, in the conversion process, to remove the Jeffreys watch and include H4 lying on the table as shown here. Nl20/2090 is another copy.
