A bust-length portrait of Augustus Keppel (1725–1786) in flag officer’s full dress uniform, 1783–7. Lettered beneath the image with the title, production details and publication line: ‘Admiral Lord Viscount Keppel From an original Picture by Sir Joshua Reynolds, in the Collection of his Royal Highness the Prince Regent. / Drawn by J. Jackson, Engraved by E. Scriven. / Published March 12, 1814, by T. Cadell & W. Davies, Strand, London.’ This portrait was engraved by Edward Scriven after an intermediary drawing by John Jackson of Joshua Reynolds’s full-length oil painting of 1786, which was painted for the Prince of Wales (later George IV) and remains in the Royal Collection. The print was published by Thomas Cadell and William Davies on 12 March 1814 for their ‘The British Gallery of Contemporary Portraits’. Reynolds was a good friend of Keppel and painted his portrait on several occasions. The painting upon which this print was based was the artist’s final portrait of Keppel, painted in the final months of the admiral’s life and possibly finished after his death. (Updated May 2019.)
