The reels of gutta percha covered conducting wire conveyed into tanks at the works at Greenwich

Print. From the mid-19th century onwards there have been factories producing submarine cables and associated products in Greenwich and Woolwich. Until well into the 20th century up to two-thirds of the world's submarine cable was made at the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company (Telcon) (now Alcatel) works on the Greenwich Peninsula.
